I came across Internations through a paid ad on Facebook and decided to give it a try. I completed the registration process, but the next morning I received an email saying my membership was declined.
This was quite confusing, as I fit exactly the target audience they claim to serve - I am an expat living and working abroad. There was no explanation provided for the rejection, which makes the whole process feel arbitrary and non-transparent.
I can’t help but wonder whether factors like my country of origin played a role, since they require you to provide your hometown during registration. Without any clear criteria or feedback, it leaves room for uncomfortable speculation that there might have been a racist factor involved.
Another concern is that they collect a significant amount of personal information upfront, before even approving your membership or providing clear details about pricing. That raises questions about how this data is being used and whether the platform is more focused on data collection than actually building a community.
Overall, the experience felt unclear and somewhat unsettling, and I would have expected more transparency from a platform aimed at expats.
InterNations is engaging in predatory billing practices that completely disregard Australian Consumer Law. Despite offering their services to Australians, they continue to rely on "dodgy" German subscription tactics—such as opaque auto-renewals and intentionally difficult cancellation paths—that are non-compliant with our local consumer protections. It is unacceptable for a global platform to operate within our borders while ignoring the legal obligations they have to Australian users. If you are in Australia, be warned: they will lock you into a cycle of unauthorized charges and hide behind jurisdiction excuses to avoid accountability. Stay far away from this service until they bring their business practices in line with the law.
Expensive, hard to cancel and half the people you meet are just trying to sell you something. Can't recommend it.

My account was suddenly banned for no reason!!! Tried to contact support repeatedly to no avail. Total silence! Is this a joke? Terrible website!!!
Very abusive behavior from customer support. Impossible to build a community in my city as my events are labeled as commercial which they are totally not. And they get deleted.

I was a member of InterNations, Rome Community, for around two years and ultimately left due to repeated negative experiences that raised serious concerns about how the platform is managed.
I encountered what appeared to be inconsistent and selective enforcement of rules. I was required to use a clearly identifiable profile photo, while many other members continued using generic images without any visible enforcement.
In November 2025, I attended an event where I experienced unprofessional conduct from a Consul that disrupted the event. More broadly, it often seemed that certain events catered to personal networks rather than the wider member community.
A particularly concerning issue involved disparaging remarks made about me by another member. Despite reporting this, no effective action was taken at the time. The situation only changed after I involved legal counsel, which raises questions about how seriously such reports are handled.
Following this, I experienced what I can only describe as further unfavorable treatment, including being denied opportunities within the community without clear or transparent reasoning.
Based on my experience, there appear to be issues with consistency, accountability, and moderation. I will also be consulting the Italian Consumer Authority regarding these concerns. I hope InterNations reviews how it enforces its rules and handles member complaints to ensure fair and transparent treatment.

Humiliating and unprofessional
I've sent a request to join. They said they will review. And in less than 15 minutes, I got a message that my request was declined! As a senior researcher who has worked in the best universities in the world, this is absolutely rude and meaningless, especially when the declining email mentioned nothing about the reason for the rejection.
This is the text of the email I got:
"Thank you for your interest in our international community. We regret to inform you that your request for membership has been declined.
InterNations is a closed community for approved members only, which means that we review each membership request individually. In this way, we can ensure that InterNations remains a community of trust for current, former and future expats around the world.
Admission to our community may be temporarily restricted for various reasons. However, as we continuously review our admissions policy, you may be able to join InterNations in the near future."
This looks like a scam to me, and there was no way to appeal the decision. So if you have a shred of self-respect, stay away from this site.

If there would be an option to leave zero stars, that's what they deserved! I tried to join their organization, was rejected twice without any reason nor any explanation. I sent them an email, no response. I'm glad I looked up their online reviews, and realized that everything is for reason. Happy I didn't join them!

the subscriptions fees are not worth it, the events are political rather than social, people in NY are completely wako, organizing political events on this social platform, trying to influence the voters. the whole experience was disturbing

I ´m a member since more than 7 years, and since the Covid they changed the prices of the subscriptions, it’s now very expensive to be just a classic member
. I m now thinking of leaving the app, what they propose you can have the same experience with others social media. But seriously - 20€ /month - goodness, you’re out of your mind! Too sad, it was a good app before … now it’s useless.
Auto renew without warning. Impossible to cancel and they threaten legal action to collect.
I signed up for a free account, and almost immediately got a message purportedly from someone welcoming me as a newcomer to a city I'd lived in for over 40 years. I went to reply to that message but couldn't, instead I got a popup saying to choose a paid subscription in order to reply.
If you want to actually take part in this community you need to pay. Yes, they have a free option but it does not allow you to use any fundamental features of the InterNations site. You can find the same community free of charge elsewhere online, InterNations is purely for the money.
I went to delete my InterNations account, but instead of deletion I received a popup that said I had logged out. So I again tried to delete and got another popup saying my account was "temporarily suspended" due to "breaching their guidelines". I read the guidelines and came nowhere near breaching any of them. I didn't even engage in any way with anyone in my brief attempt at using the InterNations site.
So I contacted InterNations and asked that my account be deleted, but they just told me to log in and delete it from there. I told them I could not log in, just kept getting the "temporarily suspended" popup. No reply.
My information remains on their servers and they have been unwilling to work with me to ensure that my account has actually been deleted. This has been the worst experience, out of many, in deleting my account from a website.

I've been a member of InterNations for a few years now. Since 2019 to be precise. And I've also been a Consul of a group from 2021 till present, organising events. It's been a lovely and helpful way to get to know an awful lot of new people who have then become friends and with whom I've shared hundreds of nice moments: from aperitifs, to visiting exhibitions, to going to the theatre or to the cinema, up to hiking in the mountains, going to the seaside and also spending weekends and holidays together. So, what to ask for more...
If you're into languages like me - I teach languages to professionals, managers, businessmen, companies, etc. - that's a wonderful opportunity to keep them trained since you get to know people from all over the world. Which is something special in itself since you get to know first hand about other cultures, ways of living, and so on.
I'd definitely recommend to become part of the community. They organise so many things and there are so many different groups all over the world. So while travelling, if you're all alone, you can always rely on one of the events there are up somewhere.
Not to be missed!!!

I’ve had a fantastic experience with Internations. The local organizers here in Beijing are great, and the customer service is top-notch. It is rare to feel so taken seriously by support teams, and their responses were incredibly quick.
