Slow final bill and sitting on credit

I switched away from HE and already had enough credit on the account to pay for the final bill and then HE took another DD 2 weeks after my account switched. When I asked them to expeditie the final bill and refund they replied that final bill can take 4-6 weeks. We are still waiting for the opening meter read from the new supplier so we can raise the final bill based on that.

Once it has been validated by the system flows we can then look to generate the final bill hence why this process can take several weeks.

I then asked them to just refund the last DD and got the same reply again.

I see other people are having the same issue.

Hello Peter, we're sorry to hear that you've been disappointed with the final billing process following your switch away from Home Energy.

We understand how frustrating it can be to see a Direct Debit collected shortly after your supply has transferred, particularly when your account was already in credit and you were expecting a prompt refund.

Final bills cannot be produced until the opening meter readings provided by your new supplier have been validated through the industry process. This ensures that both suppliers use the same agreed readings and that customers are billed accurately for the energy they have used. Whilst we appreciate that this can take several weeks, it is a standard industry process and not unique to Home Energy.

We recognise that waiting for a final bill and any resulting refund can be frustrating, especially when funds remain on the account during this period. However, until the final balance has been confirmed, we are unable to determine exactly how much credit is available for refund.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.

Kind regards,

Home Energy

Quick painless experience

Dealt with Rachael, kept to her promise on when she'd contact and what would be done. Cannot ask for anything more. Needed a final bill and she picked up with the other provider and resolved in a very timely manner.

Brilliant support

Just joined the company, seeking a competitive deal. Process was very easy and took less than 10 minutes. I had a minor query and used the chat function. All resolved within seconds - fantastic service. All of this and saving a small fortune, too.

Happy customers

We switched to Home Energy when they offered the best fixed-rate deal. The process was simple, their website was easy to use, their billing was clear and their customer service was very responsive and helpful.

Pleased with Home Energy.

Have been with Home Energy for 18 months without any problems. Their KW/hr tariff has consistently been the cheapest on comparison sites. Last year I paid a fixed 19.99p per unit and this year it's a variable tariff which started off at 22p per unit but has since reduced to 21p per unit with a standing daily charge of 57.9p.
Previously EON required me to have a meter installed in order to get their cheapest tariff, but Home Energy don't seem to use the meter. This is no problem as I've always taken my own monthly meter reading for my spreadsheet so it is no problem also sending the reading off to Home Energy.

Script-free, bot-free customer service - great

Joe talked without script and was a refreshing change from bot-like chats. He answered all questions directly and was what customer service should be. Getting a smart meter that works has taken three months because of involvement of third parties and their faulty tech, but at least it's reassuring to be with a company that has good customer service.

Poor communication

I cancelled well within the cooling off period but got charged £85 while I thought I had switched to another provider. No communication to confirm either way.

Hello Ms Evans, thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear that your experience didn't meet expectations.

We understand how frustrating it can be to believe a cancellation has been processed within the cooling-off period, only to later receive a charge and be left uncertain about your account status. Clear communication throughout the switching and cancellation process is extremely important, and we're sorry if this wasn't your experience.

We'd welcome the opportunity to review what happened and clarify the circumstances surrounding the charge. Please contact our customer service team with your account details so we can investigate further and ensure any concerns are addressed appropriately.

Kind regards,

Home Energy

Hello Mr Close, thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We're sorry to hear that your switch away from Home Energy has been disappointing.

While we're pleased to hear that you found the service itself reasonable, we understand that delays in receiving a final credit refund can be frustrating, particularly when you've been waiting for an extended period.

Refunds can occasionally take longer than expected if final account checks are still being completed, but we appreciate that clear communication and timely resolution are important. We'd like the opportunity to investigate this for you and provide an update on the status of your account.

Please contact our customer service team with your account details, and we'll be happy to look into this matter further.

Kind regards,

Be careful with this company

Be careful with this company! after you move to another supplier they continue to take unauthorised payments and this could leave you overdrawn… also they reassure you there will be an ‘urgent refund possibly same day?’ Here I am 3 days later still waiting, so not in any hurry to give me my money back! I should have cancelled the direct debit and let them bill me for the outstanding £40
Update 27 May, there’s something very odd going on with this company? I didn’t get the refund as promised and I chased up again yesterday and they said there was no record of my previous call (despite the fact they sent an email) and it would definitely be paid later in the day… It wasn’t! I called again this morning and they said it would definitely be paid today! There’s always a smell of insolvency when they take money they shouldn’t have and keep promising to pay it back but don’t?
In response to the supply from Home Energy - my contract ended 18 April with £40 in debit, you took the full payment on 20 May, over 1 month later… thanks
Update 28th May - after 3rd call to them yesterday where operator assured me the money would be refunded that afternoon and she’d liaise with everyone to make sure this happens and also listen to the two other calls to see what went wrong and then keep me fully informed… I never hard from her again and I didn’t get my money! Jeez this company is in serious trouble!
I finally asked my Bank to recover my money and the bank has now reversed the direct debit… if this company go under at least I’ll have my money!

Hi David, we’re sorry to hear about your experience and appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback.

When an account closes following a switch to another supplier, there can sometimes be a delay while final industry readings are received and the account is fully reconciled. During this process, a scheduled Direct Debit may still be collected if it falls within the billing cycle before the final balance has been confirmed. This is not intended to leave customers out of pocket, and any excess credit remaining on the account is refunded once the final balance has been completed.

We do understand, however, that the frustration here has been made worse by the delays and inconsistent communication you experienced regarding the refund timescales. If a refund has been advised, customers should receive clear and accurate updates, and we’re sorry this did not appear to happen in your case.

We’d also like to reassure you that refund processing delays can occur for a number of operational and banking reasons, and are not linked to the financial position of the business. We appreciate how concerning this situation must have felt from your perspective, particularly after needing to chase multiple times.

Your feedback has been noted and will be shared internally as we continue working to improve both our account closure process and communication around refunds.

Gen Zero’s strike again.

I had a really frustrating experience with Home Energy. When I tried to join online, their system wrongly labeled my meter as a Smart Economy 7 meter, which it isn’t. That was the only tariff available, so I couldn’t proceed. I had to phone them instead.

When I called, the young lady who answered was dismissive. She kept pushing me to do it online, even though I said I preferred a phone call. She asked, “What’s wrong with the online process?” and I replied, “What’s wrong with the telephone process?” After that, she went silent and had no answer. The call broke down, and I ended up giving her a piece of my mind, with a few choice expletives.

Having done some research, I learned that Home Energy is a family-owned business, which explains a lot—the person answering the phone had the arrogance of either an owner or a child of one. Why does Generation Z think that telephone conversations are something nasty and awful? Honestly, they have no concept of real-world life—everything has to be online with them. I won’t be joining this lot, and I do not recommend them.

I’ve just taken the time to read through the negative reviews. I feel completely vindicated. 20% negative, but not a good luck. We all can’t be wrong. Don’t go anywhere near them!

Hello Simon, we’re sorry to hear that your experience with our sign-up process left you feeling frustrated.

We appreciate that issues relating to meter types and tariff compatibility can be inconvenient, particularly when they prevent customers from completing their application online. Our team will always try to guide customers towards the quickest and most suitable route to complete their setup, but we’re sorry if this interaction came across as dismissive or unhelpful.

We also understand that preferences differ, and many customers still value speaking to someone directly over the phone. We certainly do not discourage telephone support, and we’re disappointed to hear that the conversation broke down in this way.

That said, we do ask that interactions with our colleagues remain respectful at all times, as our teams are here to help and should not be subjected to abusive language.

We take all customer feedback seriously and continuously review our processes and training to improve the experience we provide.

Kind regards,
Home Energy

Well done Rachel! Home Energy Customer Service

Having left British Gas for poor customer service I am so pleased with Rachel at Home Energy who was so helpful today I felt heard and supported in sorting out my billing. She spent the time explaining the meter and direct debit billing increase. Thank you.
