I did a review of Heraklion Airport 2 years ago. It hasn't changed a bit! Toilets are still disgusting. Lounge is still average. Boarding still haphazard. Ho hum.....

The experience could have been smoother. It is important to keep an eye on the gate screen, as no announcements were made when boarding began; we nearly missed our flight as a result. For future trips, we might opt ​​for Chania Airport instead.

The worst airport I have EVER been to so Effing small/crammed with all the people there 🙄.

Build the Airport Bigger FFS

If I could award this airport zero stars, I would. Quite the worst airport experience I’ve had in over 60 years of worldwide travel. I won’t return to Crete - that’s for sure. Simply not worth the hassle.

I recently passed through Heraklion Airport and had a deeply unsettling experience with the security screening process. While I understand that random spot checks are a standard security procedure, the manner in which this was handled felt entirely arbitrary, opaque, and unprofessional. As a minority traveler, being singled out without any clear explanation or polite communication left me feeling targeted and unwelcome. Airports should ensure that security protocols are executed with consistency, transparency, and basic courtesy for all passengers. Unfortunately, this experience fell far short of that standard.

This airport is absolutely disgusting. I feel sorry for the staff working in these conditions till the new airport is built. Toilets dirty,

Flew back from Heraklion airport last night only to find both of our suitcases had had their padlocks removed and disposed of and been rummaged through as zips were in different places. Perfume had been stolen from one of the cases. Other than that check in was disorganised madness!!! Screens told us which gate to go to and then got changed to one with only disabled seating. After everyone had got there. Gate opened quickly and then left standing outside waiting for bus for over 20 minutes. Toilets were disgusting toio!!! Best thing about the place was the sandwich place at check in desks. Travelled many times and never had luggage theft before 😢

I've travelled to alot of places and this is by far one of the most disgusting airport.

We had two checked in cases opened and items taken from one when we arrived back in the UK. We were on a 0240 flight from Hereklion to East Mids flight yesterday. Fuming!! High value we kept on us in our small cabin bags thankfully but someone took 400 cigarettes purchased on the island and a brand new bottle of aftershave.

The toilets are hideous! I entered one in Departures where a cleaner had just been in and the cubicals were dirty with urine on floors and faeces in the toilets. Passengers should have more respect let's face it but I was surprised to see that. In the men's toilets my partner said they were as bad.

I tried upstairs toilets instead and noted they were better but still dirty. Toilet seats missing and everywhere smelling of urine.

So mix theft and filth and it's enough not to use that airport again. Our friends travelled back from Chania and had no issues so my recommendation is AVOID HERAKLION AIRPORT

Airport needs massive improvements, no sitting spaces, toilets disgusting and overall very poor. Would put me off going back to Crete it was that bad an experience.

Thieving baggage handlers!! Upon my return to the UK, I noticed my brand new perfume package had been opened and the perfume stolen. The only way this could’ve happened is the baggage handlers at Heraklion stole it.

After reading reviews we were braced and ready for hell. I was pleasantly surprised. Yes it's tired and old, feels like the 80s in there but the loos were clean and had loo roll. Eateries are expensive but they are in every airport. Aircon works and staff are nice. My advice is get there 2hrs before your flight and go straight thru security. We dropped our bags easily with no queue and now waiting by our gate, it's chilled and cool. Honestly not bad at all.

The worst airport I have ever been to! They sold me a bottle of water for €5.90 !!! Daylight robbery! It was in a shop named Olympic catering next to B11 gate in Heraklion airport where a price sign says €3 for a 1 litre bottle of water but then they charged me €5.90 ! When I asked why they said that sign is old and not valid anymore !!!! Disgusting!!!!

After an 18 day holiday and the dreaded return journey home we were pleasantly surprised at the great customer service we had as we booked in for our BA flight.
The staff were lovely, pleasant, professional and very helpful.
We then went through customs (not the best experience) The communication is not great and they rush you through without much explanation. Duty free experience, again staff were great, extremely pleasant, friendly and helpful. Thumbs up.

This Airport is about one of the most chaotic ones I’ve been sofar, it absolutely doesn’t deserve to represent an international airport…….gates are way to small, hundreds of people standing around 2 hours before flight! No room to sit and eat something, and quietly wait for the flight to depart 😥

Horrible airport. Not run properly. Bag security needed signs so it could be understood and they didn’t waste so much time sending people back. The toilets were disgraceful. I looks like they haven’t ever been cleaned. They smelt. We’re full of poo. Pipes falling off the walls, leaking toilets and waste. Toilet roll holders didn’t even work and the soap was in plastic water bottles? Also ridiculously expensive for any source of food. Not enough seating either.

Has got to be the worst airport ever. Had a wonderful holiday in crete to be saddened by my departure. No organization huge queue but no one knowing for which desk. Not enough flight display boards. Not nearly enough seats and couldn't sit on floor as they were filthy. Toilets with no paper hand wash or even seats and they were dirty and smelly. Bins overflowing. Barked at by staff when going through hand luggage check totally rushing people and actually saying hurry up. This place totally let's the beautiful island of crete down.

I have a fly on the 10/10 my mistake I checked the wrong time and I missed, I go to Easyjet desk ask for help try to find another fly, very rude appoint-me a desk .
Offer me extremely expensive flies, I couldn't afford try another desk,l same, which I bought the fly cost £200.00 next .
After I found Easyjet provide a rescues fly , they find you a fly and charge only £110.00 nobody told me that .
Overall aeroport is too small for too many people and WiFi not working. .... very disappointed

Worst airport in the World !
I love Crete but actually dread this airport arriving is fine in & out but knowing you have to come back through this hell hole to go home it really does spoil your holiday!
*The hygiene of the toilets is utterly disgusting & the smell inside them
* The speakers with flight announcements terrible’!!
* The seating availability! No where near enough! & the heat is ridiculous in there.
* The price of water we paid was €6.50
😔We won’t come back again after the last time experience we had in June, & we have put up with travelling here over past 4 years to get back to the island we love but this airport needs a lot of care and improvement for tourists and there staff

This airport was used in the film Shirley Valentine and still looks the same as when filmed in the 80s no belts work no air conditioning rude inpatient staff and too small for the number of travellers each year 1000s of travellers put millions in to the economy please use some to update this airport before there is god forbid a accident that could not be helped with properly
