While we don't verify specific claims because reviewers' opinions are their own, we may label reviews as "Verified" when we can confirm a business interaction took place. Read more

HBF- your benefit may be only the hospital not the surgeon.

Subscribed 'Top Hospital' to HBF for over 40 years (that's hundreds of 1000s of dollars), currently $526 per month... just in case one of us might need decent hospital care... one day. Now I'm booked for just that, shoulder replacement. Asked for a quote months ago from HBF for my recommended surgeon in Qld. Quote just said 'Known Gap'- no $$ mentioned. Imminent procedure specialist & assistant $8869. Just checked with HBF their contribution to the operation... they pay 25% of MBS fee for this procedure= $414.55 (Medicare pays 3 times this!) and I pay $7210.
I HOPE THAT WHEN YOU ASK YOUR HEALTH FUND FOR A QUOTE THEY TELL YOU HOW MANY DOLLARS YOU'LL BE UP FOR....because to me that's what a quote is.
Anaesthetist another $4000 of which HBF and Medicare pay $900!

Frustrating and incompetent

Its just so typical that the customer has to chase down correct reimbursement even after literal receipts have been provided to hbf. If you don’t chase them up you wont get the correct amount back. Then when you do contact them about it you get stuck on hold for ages and then “theres no supervisor” available and the person you speak with has literally no ability to actually help you. Very frustrating
