I would never recommend Guardian Dental insurance to anyone. Their claims process is an absolute nightmare of incompetence and endless delays.

Guardian Dental's claims process is an absolute disaster. I submitted my claim in February, provided all requested information, and received nothing but broken promises, repeated requests for the same documents, and endless delays — now my treatment quote expires in days with zero resolution. Avoid Guardian at all costs.

Good insurance, but website and policy info disclosure need work

I receive Guardian Dental insurance for free and I pay a couple dollars a month for Guardian Vision through my employer. So far, all dental claims have been accepted and processed quickly. They cover 100% of preventative care and of 80% basic care, and I'm thankful for that. I haven't used my Vision insurance yet, but I will in a couple months so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll be as good as the dental insurance. I'm sure it will. I would have given Guardian Dental five stars but I couldn't overlook the difficulties I had finding policy information. The terms of my Guardian policy should be easily accessible on the website just like my Guardian insurance cards, but they're not. In fact, the policy terms aren't available on the website at all, and that bothers me. How do I hold Guardian accountable for their part of the agreement if I don’t know what the hell they agreed to? For that matter, how am I supposed to make informed decisions about my health if I don’t know what’s covered? Unfortunately, that simple little issue can create a lot of distrust. I'm just glad I have an HR department that I can turn to for info.

No return calls, taking way too long for review

It has been stressful to say the least to get responses and every time I have provided the information they requested, they said they didn’t get it - I have a life emergency event and i am dealing with trying to get approved when my surgeon specified it was a new life threatening event not pre existing and they are stressing me out so bad while trying to heal . It’s not ok to not work on a claim until the day someone calls. This should been wrapped up . It’s so frustrating . I do not recommend short term disability thru this company .

This company is absolutely criminal

This company is absolutely criminal. I have NO CLUE how they could be rated A+ through BBB... makes me want to rethink the BBB. I have a family of 4 on their Family plus dental nonsense for $89 per month. First of all.... EVERY SINGLE CLAIM WAS DENIED at first. I had to call and write and call again to have my claims accepted. THEN my claims were all only partially paid- and these were all for preventative care. I paid out over $700 in additional fees that were supposed to be 100% covered according to the explanation. Apparently, they only pay out about $50 total for cleaning, X-Ray and enamel sealant (kids). Mine and my husbands cleaning and X-Rays were $370 total, which is pretty typical in my area unless you are going to a shady "dentist" in a strip mall that is more likely to break a tooth than clean it. After spending HOURS on the phone, we got it down to $200. We did this twice. Same thing with my kids but ended up spending about $300 total for their cleanings. All in all, I spent nearly $1800 for dental care. It would have been SO MUCH CHEAPER just to cash pay. Ridiculous!!!!

If I could rate this clown company…

If I could rate this clown company negative stars I would. Everyone I’ve talked to in customer service has a language barrier. I had surgery early January on my shoulder, and I still haven’t received one penny in Short Term Disability. Set up direct deposit and these animal balloon makers sent me checks, yes multiple checks. Then to make matters worse, these red nose, horn tootin, makeup wearing, birthday rentals sent it to the wrong address. Idiots!!!!!

Determined not to support employees

It feels like they are practically trying to put any arbitrary administrative obstacle in my way in order to deny me FMLA. Like they are determined to deny me no matter what. Inconsistent directions on their processes from staff. If you get the wrong set of instructions from one staff, another can deny it based on some arbitrary administrative process requirement no one informed you about. Frankly, it feels like they are trying to put up obstacles so I will give up. They take weeks to respond, which to my understanding is illegal. By the time I get a response, editing any issue on the application is impossible because it's out of date.

No stars

No stars. Insanely horrible customer service. Have been trying for WEEKS to get someone on the phone. Still show my STD pending over 6 weeks after my application and can’t spam to anyone about it!! All robots and no people. When you do get someone, they put you on hold and hang up. They’ll gladly take my money though!!!!! Will never ever have this company for anything moving forward. Unfortunately it was my only option this time around. Never again. Do not use this company for any coverage.

Deceptive dental insurance

3 years of paying premiums and I am covered $61 on an $1,800 bill. x-rays, initial exam, one filling, all say they are covered at least at 60% if not 90-100%. So many lies. Also got a periodontal cleaning which I was not expecting to be covered, but then in fighting the big fight found out that, too, should have had some coverage. NEVER should this company be allowed to participate in the Marketplace. Shouldn't be allowed to be in business with this many people claiming financial damage by deceptive practices.

My dentist dropped Guardian because…

My dentist dropped Guardian because they were so slow to process claims. I filed an out-of-network claim with payment payable to me directly. They requested my dentist's License number and TIN (which they would already have since he used to accept Guardian) before they would process the claim. At this point I decided it wasn't worth the effort. However, I checked the Guardian website and found the claim was processed and a check issued on Dec 19, 2025.
I called Guardian customer service and they said the check was issued to my dentist. Their help line seems to be operated by an outside the USA entity and was pathetically useless.

Awful customer service

They never sent me any documents and when I called their awful customer service, despite providing my SSN, date of birth, address name of the company i work for and ID card numbers, they said that they couldn't help me because I didn't have a specific number (that THEY NEVER sent me in the first place) and there's no way for me to get it. They kept bouncing me from number to number. They are a disgrace

I have Guardian through work

I have Guardian through work, I recently had to have a surgery on my foot to allow myself to keep working and in turn keep paying for insurance....

They certainly want me back to work, but boy do they not give a crap about me being healthy enough to do so. I am on STD and though no company provides fiar honest STD, Guardian takes it to a new level. They say they pay bi-weekly, technically they do, by one day. Essentially they pay you once a month and somehow they seem to figure out what pay schedule works the worst for you. "Oh you've been making this much a week for the past decade and paying us, we'll give you 1/3 of that once a month, also our direct deposit takes 48 hours longer than any other business in existance." I can get my federal tax return 21 days after filing. Took over a month to get my first approved payment from Guardian. So although my rent is paid, my credit is tanked due to not being able to pay on the pay dates. They do everything in thier power to delay paying you even after your approved with an benefit end date. I literally can't walk for weeks, there is no way to force me back to work. I just don't understand how these types of behaviors are not considered predatory. They are essentially kicking people while they are down.

The Worst

This is the worst dental insurance company out there. My dentist recommended a crown for a broken tooth, which was absolutely necessary. The procedure was two hours long and painful. Guardian denied the claim twice, then when the dentist himself called to argue on my behalf, they told him they were no longer taking appeals. Don't waste your money on coverage from these scam artists.

If you have the option to choose your dental or life insurance company, pick someone else. I do not recommend this company at all. I would change if I could.
They denied my claim for a crown. How simple would you think getting a crown should be? I have two different dentists from two separate companies that both recommended a crown for my tooth, that was cracked. My dentist sent multiple letters and phone calls, and still this insurance company denied it. You can see they don’t care about the patient, we all know they care about $$. I have no other options, but to pay out of pocket.
What I will do is make sure others are aware of how this company treats people, so that people can run the other way. Please share with anyone else that is contemplating choosing a dental or life insurance company.
Don’t use guardian life insurance company of America.

If I could give 0 stars I would

If I could give 0 stars I would. I have guardian Ltd benefits through an employer. I have a disability, and I was initially approved for Ltd benefits. After a few months they had to do a “review”. I was cut from my benefits in July 2025. My medical condition never improved, in fact increasingly gets worse the older I get. My disability will never go away. I appealed the decision in July 2025. They’ve basically harassed my doctor for medical records, forms for him to fill out, more forms for him to fill out, as if I’m his only patient. Today 9/29/2025 I get a call from Tara the case worker saying that now my case needs a peer review. They drag their feet purposely, and for no good reason. I hate them so much.

100% coverage is a total scam

Guardian rejected paying for claims for an exam for a broken filling because I had the exam done when I was in the office for a teeth cleaning. This despite the fact I had "100% coverage".

Apparently doing something when it is both logical and convenient is not payable.

But they sure do love their sports sponsorships on their Facebook page.

They deny every claim or pay little to nothing

They deny every claim. They claim out of network they cover 80% of work. When they do pay, it's more like 10-20%. I paid full price for cleanings which are supposed to be 100%. I have spent thousands of dollars out of pocket while they have only paid only $400 total, but charge me $60 a month for dental insurance and reject coverage on all of the procedures even ones that have no wait period or you have already passed the waiting period. They are a rip off. It's significantly more expensive to have this insurance opposed to paying directly out of pocket because they just constantly reject your claims or counter offer extremely low. Please do not get this insurance. I absolutely wish I never did. They are 100% a scam and I'm surprised they haven't been hit with numerous law suits by now.

Strong avoid - this is not good vehicle for insurance or saving, tho it is good for not paying tax

This is, in effect, a Ponzi scheme. We had life insurance with them, and their "independent" financial advisors said that the value would grow with the market as a savings scheme, making it a tax-efficient way to save. If they continue to take in revenue then the value of their fund increases, framed as good for you, what they don't tell you is that you cannot access this, as the cash cow you are.

Over the course of seven years, it has become clear that we are being utterly misguided. Their independent advisors are their sales people but are independent in that they cannot actually take any action when you need something, despite access.

We are shown inaccurate representations in graphs, and nothing is in clear language. It is all intentionally disguised as good professional advice, but as we try to take our money out now, we are down 25% and the opportunity cost of 7 years.
