Brilliant birthday cream tea - the best we have had.

We watched the TV show about the hall and how it was transformed in to this amazing place, the money that has been thrown at it, clearly shows.

We enjoyed the show so much my better half decided to book an afternoon tea for us for my birthday, we journeyed the two and a bit hours to the hotel, and gto a bit worried when we saw roads closed but there was a big sign saying access to the hall was allowed, so off we toodled.

We arrived at the first part of the hall, a welcome at the front gates from a young lad that was very friendly and made some lovely comments on the car that we had come in. He said that our car would be parked right at the front next to other stunning vehicles. Albeit ours was a few years older than those, LOL.

The guy we met at the front of the hotel was also friendly, chatted, talked about the car, and offered to park it for us, but my better half is rather fussy as to who drives it, and yes that includes me, LOL. we parked up, went to take a picture and he immediately offered to take pictures for us, nothing was too much trouble.

We advised we had arrived earlier than expected, as the journey was rather easier than we thought, so he asked us to sit in the reception area while he went t see if our table was ready, which it was, but the chef's had not produced the relevant food for us yet, so we had a wander around the grounds, which are stunning, and must take an army to keep everything in such a pristine condition, and that includes the house.

We went back after about 15 minutes and were escorted to our table, which was more of a coffee table with two arm chairs, which were really comfy, we were given a menu, which showed a number of teas and coffee's that were available, and a run down of what we would be getting for the afternoon tea.

Tea arrived and shortly thereafter the first part of the afternoon tea, the savories, and wow, they were stunning, not only in looks but in taste and texture, there was nothing that was overpowering, you could taste all the flavours of each of the ingredients.

We decided to stop about half way through, and have the rest placed in a doggie box, LOL, which they have to hand, bespoke boxes, as they clearly have a lot of people take the food home, and watching many people taking these boxes, they must get through an awful lot of them.

Plates and cutlery were taken away, and my better half had a second pot of tea, I was happy with mine, I am not really allowed to have Earl Grey, but I did break the habit of a lifetime and ignore my consultant and have some, and it was beautiful.

The pastries and scones arrived, and again, there was just so much of it that we could not manage to eat them all, but we did have a fruit scone with the home made jam and clotted cream, that was more than enough for me, all the rest went into another doggie box, LOL.. Lunch for today.

The entire trip was amazing, we have stayed in a lot of five star hotels and had meals in amazing places, but this place was just head and shoulders above them all, the friendliness of the staff is second to none, yes it can be a bit unnecessary for all the staff to ask you how your day is, but they do not know if you have been asked it before, it is not their fault, if some decide that staff being friendly is a fault, then that is just very sad.

The afternoon tea is not cheap, not at all, at £160 for two, plus a 12.5% gratuity added on top making £180, and there was no glass of fizz in that price, it is something of a mega treat, something that will happen once in a blue moon, but that blue moon will happen again.

Lastly at the end, a young lady brought over a plate with some fruits and sweet jellies, and a birthday card for me, which was totally unexpected, and very welcome, and as it turned out, every table in that room had someone that was either celebrating a birthday or anniversary, so cards and similar plates were brought out to them also, again, very kind and unexpected, but very welcome.

Overall, I have to say this is probably the best hotel that we have visited, the friendliness of the staff, the standard of the service and the quality of all the food and drink were again, second to none. Thank you Grantley Hall, for making my birthday one to remember.

Wedding of the year

Came to Grantley hall on the 13th and 14th of August 2026 for what was the best wedding i have ever attended. The setting was absolutely luxurious, the food was amazing. The staff were fantastic 3 members of staff stood out for me the most. They were Daisy and Flora these girls couldn't do enough for you the customer service was out of this world. The male member of staff served us for most of the wedding, he had curly hair with a beard but I didn't catch his name but he knew all about the different cocktails and was brilliant. 10/10 for the wedding. Best day of my life.

We booked deluxe room for our 50 th wedding anniversary. We arrived on the gate and gatekeeper wished us happy anniversary which brought smile to our face. The concierge took charge of our luggage and car with speed and efficiency. Reception team invited us to welcome drink and tea was exceptional. We were shown to our room. We were also given upgrade options which we declined. When we reached our room the luggage was already there. I headed to the outside heated swimming pool and vast jacuzzi set at temperature not seen in other 5 star hotels. Loved the vast sauna and steam room and complimentary sparkling water. We were surprised to find champagne bottle and lovely card in the room for our anniversary complimented by drinks in the fridge and crisps of high standard. Wherever we went all staff were so welcoming and nothing was too much for them. Greetings from the face of all staff made our stay special. The dinner in restaurant 88 was good. Breakfast was discerning and deliciously exceptional. No doubt this is a proper small leading hotel of the world. Start to finish exceptional including water bottle lying in the car for onward journey. Faultless and Flawless.

Left disappointed again

This is the second time I’ve stayed at Grantley Hall and left disappointed. The first time we booked and ate at Shaun Rankin restaurant. I was asked to change my footwear, as apparently some of
The guests found them offensive despite them being a very expensive pair of designer trainers and a dark colour. When I explained that I didn’t have any other shoes apart from another pair of trainers with me, I was asked again to change them. We went around in circles several times and I even offered to take them off and sit in just my socks or to leave and not eat but these were also declined. In the end they agreed I could stay wearing my offensive shoes. Very strange and poor.

Last night we stayed again. This will be the last time, as we ate in the Asian restaurant and made it clear that I have a garlic intolerance at the time of booking. This was also acknowledged upon arrival. Pretty much every dish was packed with garlic and subsequently I was able to eat very little. They did knock our drinks off the bill as way of an apology, but that hardly covered the fact I left the restaurant hungry and extremely disappointed.

Upon check out today we were asked about our stay and I explained again my poor experience to which they issued a further 50% off the bill for the meal. Why wasn’t this done the night before? And I also still don’t think that it makes up for what should have been one of the main highlights of our stay to be so poor.

We also had an issue with our room upon check in and were unable to get in due to the keys not working. I returned to reception and had to stand waiting for about 10 minutes whilst staff just walked past and no acknowledgement at all whilst the one staff member on reception dealt with another customer.

When I was finally seen to I was escorted back to my room with a member of staff to make sure I was opening the door correctly which I found amazingly condescending given all that was required was to put a plastic key on a pad on the room door.

I find the hotel very pretentious and although the staff are good, they are quite over bearing at times. We were asked on no fewer than 6 occasions this morning how our stay was and our room etc etc which is way over the top.

Breakfast was also bizarre with my wife ordering granola with yogurt and berries, which was on the menu, only to be presented with a huge bowl of dry granola with not even milk to pour on let alone yogurt and berries. I ordered sausage and fried eggs and when they came the eggs were garnished with a green raw herb, why??? It just spoilt the eggs.

Overall another disappointing stay and I certainly will not be returning when places like Rockcliffe Hall and Seaham Hall offer better facilities and service without the pretentious atmosphere and at better value.
