I collect High Grade Marvel comics and the grading by Ewbank's is always acurate which is important to me. Post and packing is superb, quick and value for money. Always friendly, highly recommended.

Comic Collection

I recently sold my comic collection with Ewbanks and was very happy with the company. The person I worked with was Tom Duma who couldn't have been more helpful. Communication was good and all my questions were answered promptly. So overall I'm very satisfied with Ewbanks and would recommend them.

Unfair Shipping Prices & Rude Customer Service

Having been an Ewbank’s customer for over two years, and having spent a significant amount across many auctions, it’s disappointing to leave this review. However, I’m doing so in the hope that Ewbank’s will take note and improve their service.

The straw that broke the camel's back was a shipping invoice for a small lot of video games of low value. The shipping cost came to £26 + VAT, almost as much as the items themselves. As a small business owner, I know this type of parcel costs less than £5 including VAT to send. I raised this by email but was simply referred back to the terms and conditions, with no sympathy or understanding.

This isn’t the first time I’ve experienced slow, unhelpful, or rude service. On a previous occasion, I won several lots across different auctions and requested a combined postage invoice. The shipping team took too long to respond. Despite having written proof that I requested this within the 7-day payment window, I was later told I was overdue on a £10 lot and my account was suspended.

When I called to resolve this, I spoke to two members of staff and found both interactions dismissive. It felt as though I was a burden for calling, and there was little concern shown for the issue or the inconvenience caused.

I leave this review reluctantly, but with the hope that Ewbank’s will take steps to improve their customer service and review their shipping process to ensure fair pricing and more timely responses.

Dear John,

Sorry to hear of your dissatisfaction. Regarding the shipping costs, no customers are obliged to use our in house delivery service. Customers are welcome to use their own packing and shipping service, or if preferred, collection in person, or through a nominated individual, without appointment is possible Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I am afraid that it is not correct to state that this costs just £5 inc. VAT to send. That maybe the cost to an individual, we have to factor in the costs of materials, staff time, shipping insurance cover across the business. Shipping is increasingly expensive for us, and as mentioned clients are very welcome not to accept our quote. Everything that we sell is on behalf of private clients, the issue of the combined shipping can relate to the fact that we have to settle to our clients on each separate auction. You will be aware that we did not charge you any storage while we waited for the sales to conclude so that we could combine the shipment for you. Apologies that the hold was applied on your account, this was removed once you contacted us. Sorry that you have felt the need to leave this review which is not reflective of our customer experiences in general. We will take your comments on board. Wishing you all the best with your collecting and business

FAIR WARNING...

I used Ewbanks some time ago and I have never got over such a dreadful selling experience!
I left a collection of original film posters to be auctioned and the auctioneer I arranged to meet was not there after I had driven 2 hours to keep the appointment so I had to leave items with a colleague
I had to keep chasing them for an auction date and weeks /month later they gave me a date.
When I saw the listings online they had bundled the original posters up and only illustrated one in each bundle. How you can sell posters blind that beats me? anyhow I had to stop them from selling my items as they were not even achieving prices you would expect to get on a windswept rain sodden boot sale field more so after commission was taken - hopeless!!!. One of the posters in the £25.00 bundle was worth £160. Sorry but the experience still niggles me and I would advise to think carefully before selling through Ewbanks - sadly I wont be.
In response to the reply I could get into detail but I wont - suffice it to say you can check on the web for an original 1970s Walt Disney Dumbo poster and the sold prices on the lower end are quoted at - 1970s–1980s originals typically £200–£1,000+
This was the one that was sold in a combination bundle with no reserve which I did not specify. Anyhow it’s done and people can read the other reviews and make their own minds up.

Thank you for your review. These Lots were offered in 2023, they were seen by our valuer and receipts and pre sale advice emails sent for any requested amendments. We sell on the open market, with public viewing on all sales. These were largely modern film posters, there were certainly no posters worth £160 sold in the group Lot of seven posters, all of which were relatively modern posters. If customers are unhappy with our estimates, which reflect the open market values, then they are under no obligation to sell. It is the open market which reflects the sale prices. We are one of the leading Vintage Poster Auctioneers in the UK, and all sales are well viewed, both online and in person. The Dumbo Poster mentioned was not sold in a Lot for £25, it was sold for £65, it was a 1970s Dumbo re-release poster, it was pictured and unfortunately had damage. These 1970s re-release posters do not sell for £200 even in perfect condition at auction. They typically sell anywhere between £30 and £150. Earlier Dumbo re-release posters (1950s) sell for around the amount stated. Auctions reflect the open market. Customers are sent pre sale advices and can request reserves, we did not receive a request for a reserve from you following this pre sale advice document

Thank you for your review, the costs to us in shipping are not the same as for a private individual, we have to factor in materials, staff time and insurance. Customers are not obligated to use our in house shipping service in anyway if they are unhappy with our packing and shipping quoate. Customers can arrange for their own packing and shipping service, collect in person any weekday 9am to 5pm without appointment, or nominate an individual to do so on their behalf.

An auctioneer you can count on!

I sold some unwanted arcade and console items through Ewbank’s, and the experience was excellent from start to finish. Everything was handled on time, exactly as scheduled, and achieved the right price. The team were consistently friendly, professional, and easy to deal with.

Compared to many mainstream auction houses—which often feel aggressive and impersonal—Ewbank’s was a refreshing change. My decision to try them proved entirely justified.

I genuinely hope Ewbank’s calm, integrity, honesty, and transparency remain intact as they grow. It feels like one of those rare places where fair deals still exist, professionalism is genuine, and positive interactions go both ways.

Highly recommended.

Very Poor

Sent them information about an item I wanted valued. Website says they aim to reply in one day. They never replied or acknowledged my request.

Received a reply due to bad Trustpilot review. Seems to be the common response of "we don't have a record of an e-mail" as seen in other replies. I even have the automatic 'Valuation Submitted' e-mail back, sent on 23rd Nov, that says they'll get back in 48 hours. I wouldn't trust this company with any of my items.
EDIT: Nothing from you went into junk/spam - first thing I checked at the time. I appreciate the replies but all a bit too late, if your initial contact process doesn't work then I have no confidence in the rest.

A Lot of Trouble

Won a lot at the sale on November 18. Asked for a shipping quote and this took a week (November 25). Paid the following day. A week later (December 3), received an email claiming the invoice hadn't been paid and that I might have to pay storage charges. Emailed the sender (Barry Chappell), but he didn't reply. Phoned and spoke to him. He checked and confirmed I'd paid. It's now December 11 and I've not received the lot. Please:

* If you haven't got enough staff, don't run so many auctions.
* Answer emails promptly - it's only polite.

Thank you for your review, sorry that you are dissatisfied, your item is ready is being dispatched. I have checked through and can see we replied to all of your emails, there was a slight delay in one reply to you where a member of staff was off unwell for a few days, apologies for that. A further slight delay was caused by the payment needing to be manually reconciled hence the payment being chased with our standard wording, again our apologies for this.

We do have enough staff to fulfill our auctions, but we are a relatively small business, and it is a busy time of year for shipping requests for us.

We always appreciate customers reaching out to us with their concerns and I am sorry that you did not feel able to do so, and for the short delay on this occasion.

Thank you for your custom

How rude does somebody have to be before they are sacked?

Went to Ewbanks Auctioneers today and was met by one of the valuers a man called Mark at the Burnt Common branch. Having made an appointment to see him so we could get our Moorcroft Pottery valued my wife and I were so upset by the arrogant attitude that we had to leave.

Sorry that you felt upset by your visit, we are always honest with clients on valuations for the open market versus retail prices. I am sorry if that appeared as arrogance to you, this is not the experience of our clients. We do believe it is important to honestly appraise value for the secondary market. Wishing you the very best

Why would you bother with this firm?

Emailed enquiring about the possibility of having golf history books included in a future sale. No reply. Why would anyone bother using this firm?

Questionable auction.

I left a huge amount of Harry Secombe memorabilia with Ewbanks, including signed books, personal invitations and letters. I received £22.10.
I continually looked for these items in their catalogue prior to the sale but never found them. I also got friends to look. Were they actually sold at auction??

Disgusting lying auction house

I won a item with their auction house and their payment page doesn't work, customer service is horrendous that is if they don't just ignore customers. Rather then try to fix the problem the owner lies about customers and tries to get them flagged for his own companies failures. Disgusting auction house that should be investigated by the authorities.

The staff at Ewbanks were welcoming.

The staff at Ewbanks were welcoming, friendly and professional throughout the process. Gave me a straight-forward and experienced appraisal of what my memorabilia was honestly worth. And they were right as it turned out. Thank you particularly Tom and John. It was my first time using an auction and I enjoyed it. I wish them well for the future.

Professional and friendly

So far I have found Ewbanks and, in particular, James Spooner, very professional and knowledgeable.

They have provided me with a lot of their time and free valuations which eventually convinced me to send some cards into auction.

My cards went in and I am just awaiting the money to flow from it.

All in all, I would recommend, they know their stuff and have made it easy and a pleasure to deal with them. Once I have some more items, I will be returning to sell with them.
