The hire car was badly damaged when I picked it up. I didn't expect this much external damage with Europcar. This hire cost €35 per day (we did not buy extra insurance) with unlimited mileage.

Will never hire a car from them again
Will never hire a car from them again, we hired from Barcelona El Prat terminal 2. We have hired from smaller companies before and never had any issues. We received an email the day before returning the car to give us directions on where to return it, directions on the email brought us to the office in the terminal (which wasn't open at 3am in the morning when we were returning the car), no signage around the airport giving directions, this ended in us circling the airport a few times to find entrance to the car drop off. After returning home we recieved an email accusing us of causing a dent in the car, thankfully as my husband was so diligent he has taken photos all around the car when we 1st collected it, the photos showed the dent. Europcar tried to say we couldnt prove when photo was taken even though metadata was present. After much back and forth (which shouldn't have needed to be done as we had photographic evidence) they finally conceded and admitted dent was there before we collected it. My worry is how many people have they pulled this on? Taking photos of the car before you drive off is so important!!!!!
Unjustified charges and contract manipulation
At Barcelona Airport we were given a contract in Spanish (I wondered at a time why no bilingual contract is not available, now I know) which included a higher charge by EUR 238 compared to the price quote per our booking confirmation. The staff at pickup point told us that the difference is the deposit which will be refunded. The truth was that the staff unilaterally added a so-called "Protection Plus" insurance in the contract which was not requested by us and this was found out by us later on when complaining at the Customer Service that our deposit did not arrive. Europcar rejected to refund the unlawfully charged EUR 238. Unethical and unacceptable. Never use Europcar again as they are conducting business in an unethical manner.
I booked and paid for a car in…
I booked and paid for a car in advance. When I arrived the car was not ready. I went on vacation with my 4 year old son and he was tired og hungry. We ended up waiting for more then 1,5 hours and the manager said i have two options - either wait or cancel your booking - I chose to cancel our booking after waiting for 2 hours! And they haven’t returned my money yet!
Opening a dispute
I was charged wrongly twice, many days after the rental concluded. + deposit not refunded.
To date, they have not only corrected the mistake(s) but they dare to charge me for a third time.
Utter nonsense: to date, they owe me over 750EUR. It’s a horrible experience, not sure if incompetence or bad faith.
Opening a dispute. Never again.
Thieves
Thieves. Don't rent from this company. Charged me 180 euro for a scratch less than 3 inches on a bumper hidden to the naked eye that I didn't do. Go over your car with a magnifying glass. Never again. Charged me the exact amount of my deposit. Not a coincidence.
What a total scam of a company
What a total scam of a company. Arrived to find that our pre-booked and paid for car was going to be 3 times as much money due to the full insurance which we were told was compulsory due to travelling over a border. The car was already badly scratched and scraped. During our hire, we had a puncture of which they sent someone to collect the vehicle but would only take it away with no replacement opportunities. We ended paying for the repair ourselves and of course did not get any help with a refund despite having full insurance. This company is a total scam. I wish I had taken notice of all the reviews prior to booking and gone with a better car hire company.
If i could give minus score on…
If i could give minus score on TrustPilot, I would give EuropcarHaugesund at Madrid Airport -10! Extremely rude service, no interest in helping. Had reserved an electric mid size car, as travelling with my 8 year old son. When i arrived to pickup car, the person (who refused to give me his name, broken English, was on shift today Thursday 17th July, approx 1.30pm) He first tried to tell me i should not rent an Electric car as complicated to charge before returning the car! I said for him not to worry about this. He then told me i would get a Citroen Electric instead of the indicated Renault Megane i had in my confirmation. I am renting a lot of cars so I am totally aware that rental companies do not guarantee exactly type of car but class. I had never heard about this type, so i said ok. He was extremely rude explaining this, even people in the que shared their heads, as well as my son who could not believe why he was so rude. I was also made aware that i was there 30 minutes early compared to the time i had indicated arrival/pickup, and he was “extremely nice GIVING me the car early”! Sure i would pay for whatever time he would put down! He then told me the deposit/excess added to agreement would be EUR 6000, compared to the 3000 stated in my confirmation. At this stage i just asked him to finalize agreement so i could leave. When arriving to the parking area to pickup the car I realised they have given me a people carrier! I immediately walked over to their help desk to rectify this, but was told they could not do anything, but that i would have to go back to the que inside and talk to them again. On the way back i stopped by Hertz and rented a better car for a good deal, lovely staff. Walked back to Europecar guy, asked him to cancel my booking, gave back the keys and agreement. He was still rude, and not too helpful when asked to print me a cancellation confirmation. I did mention that i will cancel my Privilege Membership with them, his reply was “Good!” . Stay away from these guys, never experienced similar even with rentals from Europecar.
Dishonest practices ...
I rented a car from them with 'full to full' fuel policy. First of all the tank wasn't full when I got the car. But, that's fine. I did not mind. I returned the car with full tank (I drove only about 40km after filling the tank), but they charged me for refuelling of 8L of petrol plus surcharge for filling the tank. When I questioned that they responded almost immediately that it was 'technical error'. Instead of reimburse the difference they charged me again based on new invoice. So I paid twice for renting the car. Eventually after 5 days I got the refund, but for 5 days they had my money twice, which is very poor practice. Be also aware that every charge with Europcar has a surcharge ie. I wanted full insurance. I was told it would be €36 per day. I said ok. Then on the invoice there was some surcharge on that, which was €50, so the actual rate per day was €43. I would not mind that anyway, but they should be honest. Not mentioning the fact that my previous experience with them was ridicously insane. Two days after I left the rented car at their car park (it was after hours service) they called me if I still have a car with me and they tried to charge me for those extra days ... No more renting from Europcar ...
I wish I could give them 0 stars
I wish I could give them 0 stars. I've never dealt with a more dishonest company (Europcar Barcelona Airport) in my life. Their rates are good for a reason because they scam you on everything: weird fees, lies regarding refunding certain charges, horribly dented and scratched cars that took over an hour to document. It's just not worth it! I wish I would've listened to all the others who said exactly this and paid a little more for a more reputable company that actually cares about its customers.
I booked a Ford Mustang Mach-E via CarTrawler and Norwegian for pickup at Europcar Málaga. Upon arrival, I was pressured into an “upgrade” to a Ford Kuga – which ended up costing an extra €452 for a “premium insurance” I was never clearly informed about or agreed to.
The car was in poor condition: dirty inside and out, old receipts from a previous renter, no windshield washer fluid, and visible scratches and dents on nearly all sides – even the roof. It was neither larger nor better than the car I originally booked.
I sent a formal written complaint with photo documentation, but have received no response in over a week. I’ve spoken to a representative from Europcar Denmark who said the treatment I received was completely unacceptable, which confirms that this is not how things should be handled.
In English:
I feel scammed and treated like just another tourist to be taken advantage of. I strongly advise against using Europcar in Málaga unless you’re prepared to overpay for a worse vehicle and be ignored afterwards.
Avoid Europcar Spain
Avoid Europcar Spain – Dishonest Practices
Rented from Europcar in Spain and was assured by the pickup agent that all damage was already documented. At drop-off, a different agent conducted an excessive 30-minute inspection and blamed us for pre-existing scratches and missing tools from a hidden compartment—something no normal customer would ever check. We returned the car in perfect condition. This feels like a scam. Completely dishonest and predatory. Avoid at all costs.
Missing deposit
We rented two cars last summer in ibiza. Till this day we never got our deposit of 200 francs back. The employees of the Europcar website could not help us and in the end just ignored our emails and calls.
SCAM COMPANY DO NOT USE!!!
Absolutely discusting company will never ever use again.
Took out full insurance, returned the car no scratches exactly the same as we picked up.
2 months later they sent me a bill for £200 saying it happend on our hire. It most definately did not.
Currently still in arguments with europcar and after sending videos and prooving no damages were caused they still are trying to get money.
This is the first time I have used europcar and will never ever use them again. They are a scam and just out to get your money.
I wish I read the reviews before hiring the car as they are all terrible. Beleive me they will try and get more money out of you so dont be fooled.
My advice would be to hire from the smaller companies. Never in my 20 years of traveling and hiring vehicles have I had to deal with this.
SCAM COMPANY, SCAM INSURANCE
Robbing fradusters
Robbing fradusters, charge you a late fee dispite being via a package deal via jet 2 and they have flight information
Plus they try to take biggera deposits off you, be careful and I would personally never use them
Go with a company with better reviews
We rent a car for 5 days and we pay…
We rent a car for 5 days and we pay 400€ when we arrive for pick up they want 400€ for insurance , we have all printed papers with all insurance but they said the system doesn’t show that, the worst company and customer service, avoid this company
We rented a car for 5 days for 252.17…
We rented a car for 5 days for 252.17 EUR. They wanted 175 EUR for extra full coverage insurance. We accepted but on June 29 they charged 332.48 EUR extra. The total rental fee of 252.17 EUR became 584.65 EUR. In other words, they charge extra without your knowledge and consent. Keep this in mind when renting a car from Europcar Spain.
Terrible
Terrible. Gave us a bigger car we didn’t ask for and then charged us for it. We even asked if it was more money at the check in and they said no, making it seem like they did not have the car we requested in stock. Now refusing a refund when we contacted customer service for the extra charge. Complete scam.
Horrible service in Malaga
Made a reservation for a car through Europcar Denmark, for a pickup in Malaga airport.
We then has to rebook for a later flight due to a family emergency, so we land the next day.
I call customer service and they confirm that it is not a problem, although I will bot get a refund for the missed day.
I agree with them, and the get our new flight details.
We land in Malaga and proceed to Europcar. Closed and empty offices, both of them.
We end up having to take a taxi for more than 100 euros and when calling them today, the response was “this is your own problem. You should come inside opening hours”.
They knew my flight times, and was only company not open in Malaga airport. CSR confirmed that it was not a problem with the new flight.
Never had I had worse treatment from a car rental company.
They would not even allow local pickup, so now we have to go by taxi back to Malaga (100+ euros) to pick up the car. No refund, nothing.
At least they could have emailed or called about they would not be there when we landed, since their own guy had said it wasnt a problem.
Can NOT recommend
Full Cost Charges for Crossing the Border just 1 day
Very disappointing experience with Europcar.
I was wrongly charged for services I didn’t fully use, and customer service refused to offer any refund or goodwill gesture. Their handling of the situation was dismissive and unacceptable. I will not be renting with them again and strongly advise others to be cautious.
caution Careful with the insurance
Careful with the insurance, and when you receive the car. I had premium insurance, and when I received the car, I did not check the back seats, which had a tear, and they had charged me 500€. Not happy at all with the service at Barcelona Airport. Be cautious with this company, as full insurance or premium coverage is not guaranteed, and you must inspect the car before they hand it over to you. This seems like a low-cost company, and you pay for the service of a premium. The total cost for one week was over € 2,000...
