Information provided by various external sources

Dillenger began in 2007 when the founders of a small Aussie-based engineering firm were looking to build a custom bike frame made from an intricate arrangement of stainless steel rods. This seemly ‘run-of-the-mill’ hobby project led to the intriguing thought – ‘should we motorize this thing?’ Being engineers, the temptation to motorize anything was just too much to bear. This prototype vintage space frame chassis electric bike proved to be a bit of a hit and the company was asked to produce a few models locally for existing clients. One thing led to another and before long, this engineering firm was obsessed with everything electric bike related. Later in 2007, Dillenger Pty Ltd was registered as a company in Queensland, Australia. The following years led to steady, conservative growth, selling limited models locally in Queensland, Australia. Sales often took a back seat to the development of new, better-engineered models. This strategy limited Dillenger’s growth early on, but also meant that production models developed quickly and became the most reliable in a market of otherwise notoriously unreliable products. New technology in batteries, brushless motors and intelligent motor controllers led to huge improvements in the quality and reliability of electric bikes from 2008 to 2010. Even more recently, the reduction in the cost of basic electric bike components has led to the explosion the e-bike market around the world. With the reduction in cost and increase in the size of the market, there has been a flood of startups importing cheap knock-offs. Already, many businesses seem to come and go, leaving customers in a lurch with no after sales support. Dillenger marks the 7th year of production with the sale of the 10,000th unit since 2007. Dillenger’s market in the last 3 years has exploded. Products are now sold online 24/7, all around the world.

Excellent E-bike Conversion kit

I bought this conversion kit for a Felt 29er trail bike after doing some research on the website of an electronics laboratory on the battery cells included (rated "very good") and watching two videos on youtube of these kits being fitted.

The kit arrived very quickly and was reasonably easy to install. The only two problems I encountered were getting all the mounting studs out of the disc rotor on my old wheel (not Dillengers' fault obviously) and getting the pedal assist sensor mounted on the bikes' oversized tubes. (I needed to use a zip tie and some epoxy resin eventually).

The bike goes very well and although its weight has gone up by nearly 7 kg, that isn't noticeable when it's moving. The range in the relatively hilly countryside around my home is at least 40 km.

The downsides and these are minor annoyances rather than major disadvantages are (1) the motor is a bit noisy, (2) the zip ties in the kit are pretty poor quality and not long enough for oversized tubes, and (3) there are no printed assembly instructions included in the kit although there's a pdf on the Dillenger website. I also found it very helpful to watch both youtube videos again before I put it together.

Overall my conclusion is that this is an excellent conversion kit and well worth consideration if you already have a bike you enjoy riding, but are finding uphill sprints into a headwind challenging!

Review of 36volt Front Wheel Kit

Brilliant. I am a 72 Year Old living in Spain. I bought my partner an electric bike as she had trouble keeping up with me, and I was so impressed I decided to treat myself. We do live in a fairly flat part of Spain so don´t use the power very often but it does allow us to go further knowing if we do get tired we can switch the power on to get home. We do an average 10 miles a day, although not every day and have done 1350 miles in 4.5 months. I charge the battery every month and have not fully run it down yet.
I am well impressed.

aweful

I've used them twice now, the first time, I ordered 3 items one of which was not clearly marked, thus leaving me with an incompatible product for my motor, and I was told I couldn't have a refund, leaving me 350 out of pocket, the same product was shown as in stock on their UK site, but had to wait for it to be shipped from Australia, which is unacceptable, and I let them know how I felt about it, but no apology. The second time I had to buy the correct part for the previous, incompatible one, another £59 yes £10 more than the origonal for what is the same part only with a smaller hole in the middle, and yet again they were showing as being in stock on the UK site, but, yes you've guessed it, it had to come from Australia. If the BBSHD chainring adapter could have been bought elsewhere I would have went there, but as I thought it was available in the UK I had no option, if I had known it was out of the UK I would have went with Luna cycles over in the US.

No problem recommending to anyone venturing into the world of ebikes.

I bought a Dillinger mid drive kit after bad experiences elsewhere. I am very happy with the service and the product. An important point is all the extras were top quality, better than anything else I bought on eBay or from other suppliers.

Avoid

I got the bike delivered.
Firstly it wasn't assembled properly.
I had to spend some time and money to get it done.
In the last 4 months my rear wheel started wobbling 3 times. I even heard spokes snapping of while I was cycling on a regular road.
I had it fixed every time.
I do not cycle heavily or do not cycle in any potholes etc. The bike didn't fall.
When I contacted Dillinger they said that it must have been my fault and there is nothing wrong with the bike.

The bike mechanic who fixed the bike 3 times told me that the wheel isn't strong enough to support the motor.

There is no one to talk to in the company as they are in Australia and we're in the UK.

The warranty is worthless since they can always say that the problem comes from misuse. I can't prove them wrong, but how can I prove to them that I'm right.

My advice to you is buy a bike in a shop here in the UK. If something goes wrong you'll be able to go and see someone about it.

Does what it says on the box.

I fixed the unit to my wife's Giant Cypress bike. It has been a great success. Previously we had only cycled together on flat roads and even then her speed was much slower than mine. Now we travel around together with average speeds approaching 15mph. the motor only works if you peddle and provides 3 levels of assistance, or no assistance. In the main it is used in low assist which enables my wife to feel she is still getting a workout. On reaching a hill she switches to medium and is able to keep pace with me. On occasions she switches to high and breezes past me. I am buy the way a keen road cyclist with a high spec carbon Giant Defy road bike. On a downhill section the motor stops assisting over 15 mph but does not add additional drag to the bike so if able you can peddle at a faster speed.
The range is over 30 miles and it recharches in a few hours. Highly recommended have done 600+ miles since fitting in March.
Only small gripe, the fitting instructions supplied referred to an earlier unit but a look on the web solved that.

Just What the Doctor Ordered

As a 'wrinkly' living in a hilly area cycling was becoming hard work and not without risk so finding Dillenger opened a gateway to a new way of exercising without a health hazard. The kit price was good, it came promptly, well packed, excellent instructions and fitted to perfection. Very well designed, there is no difficulty in assembling the components and linking up the electronics. The 'clip-on' pedalling sensor is brilliant. In use it has proved to be excellent; I now go uphill faster than down! If exercise is your requirement you just have to be disciplined and not rely on the additional throttle too much!
