communication

Hi,

I thought I’d leave a review here — I started the course in October through till now, I know I haven’t been there because of life reasons and most recently I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD. Mohsin has been a great teacher “Receptive” skills have improved massively and I thank Mohsin for teaching me receptive as I know it can be quite hard for us students. I have gave evidence that Mohsin hasn’t communicated with me much especially with my homework. I cannot continue my sign language course without communication, the ladies in my group have been amazing — I get life gets in the way but no matter what I needed more structure and more materials sent to me but I do understand why Mohsin did the course work the way he did which I appreciate. I won’t be coming back for the foreseeable future but I thank Mohsin for his time the teaching style wasn’t for me. I thankyou all for allowing me to join the course when I did much appreciated once again take care and all the best!

Incredible!

I approached Deaf Unity to attend a team day I was hosting as the teams request was to 'learn something but not work related'. Our team is 64 strong and we're lucky to have a broad range of demographics spread across lots of roles. The booking process was really easy and the team at Deaf Unity gave full instructions and help before hand. The tutor was incredible and throughout the session he had the whole room equally engaged and enjoying themselves. The session was fascinating and everyone learnt so much. The feedback from the team was overwhelmingly positive and many have continued their learning. I would 100% recommend courses by Deaf Unity for individuals and group sessions. Thank you so much!

BSL Level One with Deaf Unity

I loved taking my BSL Level one course with Deaf Unity. Our tutor Mohsin was so supportive and made the course enjoyable and engaging - he would often sour understanding of which became more fluid as we slowly progressed and made me feel engaged in a personable conversation by the end of the course.

Would definitely recommend!

Teaching was great and really improved my confidence and fluency in BSL. Started with basics and built up to everyday conversations. Learnt many signs and expressions during the course, both generally used signs and ones specific to the students.

Best BSL Taster!

The session was incredibly engaging and the teacher pitched the activities really well, allowing us to move at a good pace, but adjusting where necessary. I felt I learnt a great deal in a short amount of time and am keen to learn more! The interpreter was also excellent, though I wonder if they are actually needed (as I'm a proponent of immersive language learning). Overall, a fantastic learning experience and I would definitely sign up for more!

Appalling course, I feel scammed

The Level 1 BSL course with Mohsin was appalling. His hands kept dropping below the camera which meant that, most of the time, I could not see them. When I emailed him about this, he ignored me. What made it worse is that he kept eliciting from students and putting up PPT slides, so I had to put the screen into gallery mode which shrunk him down to the size of a postage stamp and his completely disappeared from view. The class was overcrowded, there were far too many students. Mohsin posted homework videos on Google Classroom late every week, usually putting them up a few hours before the next class while I was at work, so I had not time to study them. He did not give us a comfort break, which is unheard of in a 2 hour zoom class, which made it very tiring after a day's work and I found it impossible to focus. He then sneakily put us into break-out rooms for far too long, clearly so that he could give himself a comfort break. He then finished the class 15 minutes early. He was so unprofessional that on one occasion he allowed his flatmate to interrupt the lesson to talk about a blocked pipe and then did not even apologise to us for the interruption. Deaf Unity insists you pay £550 for the whole course in advance, before you have even had the first lesson and met the teacher. I have a background teaching EFL and this is unheard of, the norm in EFL is to charge for one month at a time, so that students can withdraw if they are not happy with the teacher. I withdrew from the course after 5 lessons and complained to Deaf Unity, but they were dismissive and refused to reimburse me a penny. I feel ripped off and very disappointed by the poor quality of this course and will be informing Signature. I recommend avoiding this company and particularly this teacher.

We are sorry to see your complaint here, especially after our detailed response to your original complaint. We take all complaints seriously, and this helps us to uphold our high standards. After your complaint to Deaf Unity we undertook a full and detailed review of each issue in your complaint, including reviewing evidence, speaking with the teacher and seeing if any other students had made a complaint. We then responded in detail with our findings. We are a small charity working hard to encourage those learning BSL and to do our outreach work in the deaf community, and we find it disappointing that you have taken to the internet to post your views with some misleading and inaccurate information. To clarify a few points for those reading the review:

1. The number of students in the class was 9, which is in keeping with our policy and general advice on number of students in a BSL Zoom class.

2. The teacher asked the group re breaks in class, and the group consensus was to continue through without a break and to finish 15 minutes early. The teacher is flexible on this, and goes with what each group wants. It is of course always OK to take or ask for comfort breaks outside of this.

3. It is usual practice to offer time to honing practical skills with other students. BSL requires practice to learn - like any language - and the best way to achieve that is through repetition and live practice. The best way to achieve this on Zoom is through breakout rooms.

4. It is also normal practice for the teacher to interact with students, and to ask questions and gain responses – that way students can practise signing with a native signer, and get individual feedback on their signing. It also keeps class engaging. Powerpoint presentations are also a useful way of supporting learning, especially when starting out. Zoom guidance was provided at the start of the course, and if you struggled to adjust your settings to have the best view, we would have been more than happy to assist. However, unfortunately we weren’t aware this was a problem you had.

5. As with all flexible remote working, occasionally real life interrupts - this was an emergency due to a burst pipe. We are all human, and the teacher appreciated the understanding for this one-off incident.

6. We do not ask for all payment upfront (though many BSL courses do). We offer a payment plan of monthly instalments, which you signed up for. As you signed on early for the course (in February, for an April start), you thus started your payment plan early. To date, you have not actually completed your payment plan or full payment for the course, as you missed your final payment in April. We have decided to not pursue this missed payment, and we had hoped this would mean a reasonable compromise over the disagreement.

We hope that you continue with your BSL journey, perhaps seeking out a face to face class that may better suit some of your personal preferences/needs.

Amazing!

I have absolutely loved the Level 1 course this year. Stefy has been amazing, brilliant teacher, and so supportive. Learning BSL has been the best decision that I have ever made; it is such a beautiful language.

Thank you for everything you do, Deaf Unity.

A good experience

Deaf Unity have a good range of BSL courses available and signing up was simple. They have adapted their teaching of BSL to Zoom well and were helpful when contacted directly. A particular shout out to Mohsin who is an excellent teacher!

BSL level 1 was such a fun and…

BSL level 1 was such a fun and informative course. The content and structure was easy to follow and flowed well. All course materials were understandable and all that you need is practice practice practice. My tutor was both professional and knowledge and had all the patience in the world. When it came to nerves and exams he put everyone at ease quickly making the experience more enjoyable. This course is well worth doing and the company is caring, compassionate and accommodating to individual needs.
