Assam Tour
A small group explored Assam. Not too many other foreign visitors in this region. Good hotels and food. Fun travelling by train

At Darjeeling Tours we create small-group, fully escorted holidays that combine the romance of rail travel with the culture, landscapes and traditions of India and beyond. We don’t just organise rail holidays. Our portfolio also includes specialist Textile Tours within India, cultural journeys such as Konkan Railways & Beyond, and popular routes like South India & Sri Lanka by Rail & Ferry. We’ve even made history as the first group to travel the reopened British colonial sea trade route between India and Sri Lanka. For first-time visitors, our signature Indian Magic tour combines Darjeeling, Shimla and Ooty, while more adventurous travellers might choose our Textiles & Teas of Assam or NorthEast Frontier Railway itineraries, both venturing into little-explored corners of India. For peace of mind, Darjeeling Tours has been organising escorted holidays for over 20 years.

I have travelled twice to India now with Darjeeling Tours. They are the best at arranging direct with the railways of India with local couriers with great knowledge and insight.
Both DHR visits were superb. There will always be operational hiccups along the way, such is the age of the old locos, but these are always dealt with as a matter of course in a most friendly way and you really feel part of it all. The train-chasing bus guys know what we all want photo wise and are great as well! We stay at great hotels as well, where the proprietors are inextricably linked to the commercial interests of the railways and the region. I'd do it all again in a heartbeat!
I have taken part in three Darjeeling tours. Well organized and thoroughly enjoyable.
Today 3rd March I celebrate another year of life with a heart overflowing with gratitude.
I’ve just recently returned from a soul-stirring journey through India, Thank you to Darjeeling Tours and beyond - a place that touched me in ways I can hardly put into words. The sacred spaces, the vibrant energy, the quiet moments of reflection… it felt like more than a holiday. It felt like a blessing.
This birthday feels different in so many ways. Softer. Wiser. More aware.
I’m deeply thankful for the experiences that shape us, the lessons that find us when we’re ready, and the grace of another year to grow, love, and live with intention. 🙏

The recent "Himalayan Hill Railways" tour was a third such adventure in a little over a year with Darjeeling Tours UK, following previous visits on the "Indian Magic" and "Konkan and Beyond" tours in 2025, and once again it proved to be an absolute winner! The itinerary offered so many memorable highlights, featuring as it did not only the three narrow gauge hill railways (Kangra Valley, Kalka-Shimla, and the Darjeeling Himalayan) but all manner of other fascinating cultural experiences including the Golden Temple at Amritsar and the Attari-Wagah border ceremony, together with visits to Dharamshala, New Delhi, and trains aplenty on the broad gauge in different classes of accommodation, including both unreserved second class and three tier (non air con) Sleeper class...the truly authentic Indian Railway experiences! Throughout, ever-smiling tour manager Jagdeep Patel worked tirelessly to ensure that the inevitable "hiccoughs" that one encounters on such a tour did not detract from the experience ...conversely, when necessary, he'd come up with alternate or extra arrangements to ensure that everyone had more than a "full glass" at the end of each day... the viewing of sunrise illuminating Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill observatory, the visit to the Makaibari tea estate and the gracious reception given to the group in Kurseong by the new Director of DHR being three cases in point. Top hotels with excellent facilities and comprehensive menus to suit all tastes were used. An 'add on' for a number of us, beyond the advertised itinerary, of three days in Kolkata worked seamlessly, whilst others in the group headed for Agra (Taj Mahal) or elsewhere. Jagdeep's unparalleled 'local' knowledge proved invaluable in keeping everyone entertained and safe (the latter insofar as when and where to be tempted by street food!)
Thoroughly recommended!
Our holiday toured the narrow gauge railways of northern India - Kangra Valley, Shimla, and Darjeeling. We had a wonderful time and it was really effective having a group leader who lives in the country. He was excellent, and had the knowledge and contacts needed to make this type of tour work, especially when the unexpected happened! Thoroughly recommended.
