Was not clear about the cancellation policy. Stated £40 but once my daughter passed after only 1 month of learner insurance they have charged me £175!!

Caution for Learner Drivers
I found the premium quoted to insure my learner son to be competitive however, once he passed I used live chat to ask about a change to the policy. They don't insure new drivers and cancelled the policy immediately while I was on on live chat so I as a named driver was also not insured. I asked about a refund for the balance of the premium; there is no refund after month 6 of the policy! Maybe the premium wasn't that competitive after all.

I took out taxi insurance through these using riviera brokers, I had a fault accident year before with no persons injured. So my premium went up an extra 2000 pound from year before, I later realised that collingwood had the fault accident recorded with persons injured. Everywhere I have read has said that will most definitely bump my insurance up more than with persons not injured as with persons injured is a more serious offence but collingwood does not agree and says it wouldnt have made a difference so I have to just except their word for it

Whilst I appreciate your frustration with having a claim on your record from a previous policy, this is something that’s outside of our control when calculating your premium. When logging a claim, we don’t take any other details other than whether it was a fault or non-fault, therefore whether there was injuries to a third party as a result of the claim would not be a consideration when calculating the premium for your policy. We attempt to be open and honest when presenting figures to our customers before purchase to help them make an informed choice as to whether the policy will be suitable for their needs.
We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed by the increase your previous claim has made to your policy, and hope that you remain claim free with Collingwood. Of course, in the event that you do have to make a claim, our team will be only too happy to help you through that process.

Cancellation fee
Like many others I am aggrieved that Collingwood Insurance charges a £40 cancellation fee.
Do they make it clear when buying the policy? Well it's on page 2 of the policy document which I didn't read.
However, there are at least 6 Financial Ombudsman decisions on this very point, all in favour of Collingwood. I would suggest that the Ombudsman is answering the wrong question. The question shouldn't be 'is Collingwood behaving legally?' - clearly it is - it should be 'is the £40 cancellation fee Collingwood levy when a student driver passes their test unavoidable, and if so would it be clearer to add this fee to the initial premium?'
The fee is entirely unavoidable when the student driver passes their test. Which suggests that it would be much more transparent and honest to simply add it to the initial premium: Collingwood's motive for not doing so is clearly that to do so would make their initial premium less competitive.
Collingwood knows this behaviour very much irritates its customers but it has done this for years and I suggest doesn't much care because by definition its customers are one-time-only so why should it care what they think once they pass their driving test?
Fun fact: Collingwood is based in Gibraltar for tax reasons.

I can see from the information provided that your policy was purchased over the telephone with one of our agents. As we are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), all telephone calls are audited and follow a set script.
The full terms and conditions would have been read to you during the call, and we carry out several checks to ensure you understand and agree before any policy can be set up. If at any point you had indicated that you did not agree to the terms, we would not have been able to proceed with the purchase. However we do appreciate that it may have been missed by you in the call as there is a lot of information discussed when taking out a policy with Collingwood
Regarding the cancellation fee, we are required under FCA regulations to treat all customers fairly. This means the same cancellation fee applies to every customer, regardless of the reason for cancelling—whether due to selling the vehicle, passing a driving test, or any other reason outside of the initial 14‑day cooling‑off period. If we were to waive the fee for one customer and not others, this would not meet the FCA’s fairness requirements.
We regularly review our customer journey, both online and through our Contact Centre, to ensure that all important information is clear and accessible before and after a policy is taken out.
We are satisfied that this information was made available to you; however, acknowledge that this may have been missed in the online journey.
