Helpful Resources, Great Feedback, Amazing Results

I felt the access to the resources alone were worth the cost of the course. However, having the added bonus of discussing my thoughts and ideas with Ethan and other professionals in the course on a weekly business made this all worthwhile. If you've ever worked with a student that is academically talented, but just doesn't have confidence in their writing techniques, this course and the guidebook will help you immeasurably. I had the chance to use many of the approaches with my students in both small group and one-on-one settings and the results speak for themselves. As Ethan would tell you, there is no "one way" to write an essay, but these resources will help you get students writing, and that's the most important part of this process!

The resources are great and very…

The resources are great and very helpful as a student looking for where to begin. The online class was a bit crowded which made it difficult for me to get my essay reviewed and wasn’t always the most helpful. Overall I think it is a great service thought there were definitely parts I liked better then others

An investment in your profession and yourself

Ethan's classes aren't just for those new to college essays -- they're great for anyone who's looking to make an impact with students. His simple, easy-to-implement strategies help students find the nuggets of potential topics that might have otherwise been overlooked.

And not only does Ethan offer education, he offers community. Through his online and in-person sessions, he's helped me develop relationships with colleagues that last long after the last session ends.

If you're on the fence about making the investment in your profession and yourself, just do it. You won't regret it.

Gratitude

I’ve loved every video, every tip and every bit of advice that Ethan has offered for writing college essays. I took the Essay Writing course for counselors last year and it has helped me tremendously to guide kids to write their deepest stories. The structure of the course has given me so much clarity on the process. I’ve enjoyed going over the brainstorming exercises with the kids and most importantly I’ve made heartfelt connections with every kid while working with through the process. Much gratitude to Ethan and the team of College Essay Guy. Thank you!

I am a new IEC

I am a new IEC, having recently completed the UC Irvine certificate program. I've been working with students and felt that I needed a little extra instruction on college essay editing. I registered for Ethan's seminar "How to Write the College Application and Supplemental Essays" and it did the trick! The course reinforced what I already knew and enhanced my confidence to edit activity lists and application essays.

Activites, Access & Appreciation

Before addressing the essay, I have students compose their activity and honors lists.
When I ask a students if there is another way they may describe an activity, they immediately go to the CEG's Epic List of Activities List Verbs. A great resource to enable students in adding interest and strength to their Common App and scholarship applications.

With "The List of Activities You May Not Have Considered..."students brainstorm and expanded their lists with unique entries, including welcoming an adoptive sister into the family and shadowing/interviewing/interning in legal and medical fields to explore career interests.

After completing the lists it is on to the Essay Workshop in a Box!

Ethan, thank you for the Pay What You Can option. I provide access to college prep to a small group of low-income/first-gen students and you provides me with the tools to be an effective mentor!

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!

I didn't have time to listen to all your videos, but the pdf handouts and all the printable information was critical to my ability to write what I believe were good or excellent entrance essays. It's hard to know the effect of a poor college entrance essay on the colleges I applied to becuase I got into all the small liberal arts colleges I applied to but the acceptance rate was around 50%. I d,dn't get into the competitive colleges I applied to such as UC Berkeley and UCLA, but my GPA was only a 3.7 from the highly competitive, small private high school I'm coming from.

Anyway, thanks for your help, Ethan. Be well, Sharon

Consider if you need to pay or just use the free resources

This is a review of Ethan's Counselor Essay Course.

I have used Ethan's free resources over the past 5 years as a high school counselor. These resources are amazing!!! When I transitioned to being an independent counselor, I decided to spring for the course for a fee as I had been impressed with his free materials and sought out more of his expertise; however, I didn't find there to be much in the way of additional strategies that I didn't already know from the free material. There were many more examples, and while I found these to be helpful, the strategies and frameworks are much more helpful.

I know Ethan is about giving a lot away for free to make things equitable (and I support this), but if he's going to have some resources/classes for a fee, I expect to get more than examples of the strategies I was already employing with students.

More than just how to write an essay

My daughter was accepted for what we could pay. We are from a low socio-economic area and have moved several times during her school years. The advice and information she received was priceless. She won the Presidential Scholarship at her chosen college and will be going tuition free. Something that made her not as open to participate in the on-line sessions was that there were others writing about how they started their own companies, traveled the world, etc. and she felt what she had to offer/write about was not good enough or as good. That started a conversation. Thank you for this program, for your willingness to help our children and for offering the type of advice I would offer myself (it is received much better from you). There are a multitude of benefits other than just how to write an essay.

College Essay Guy is my guru

College Essay Guy is my guru. I have had a successful practice as a college essay advisor for 7 years, modeled largely off his approach. His online courses, videos, books and handouts are incredibly easy to follow. Most importantly, he helps us learn to facilitate students' self-reflection so that they craft interesting essays in their own voices to enhance their applications.

So grateful for this resource

There is so much valuable information in the CEG courses. Ethan really breaks things down to the essence of what works and why. His tools and explanations are clear, concise and effective. I am taking the courses for a second time and continuing to have new insights and "aha!" moments that are enhancing my college counseling practice.
