Fraudulent Third-Party Reseller Led to $19,415 Unauthorized Charge

Our daycare, Heritage Christian Daycare (fraudulent merch # ****5889) was the victim of a fraudulent sales scheme involving Clover and their third-party reseller Riverside Payments.

In October 2025, Riverside used deceptive bait-and-switch tactics and high-pressure sales on my mother to sign what we believed was a simple payment processing comparison document. We never authorized a contract or equipment purchase.
Weeks later, Clover sent us thousands of dollars worth of unsolicited equipment (iPads, card readers, POS terminals) and billed us $19,415.44 - equipment we never ordered, never wanted, and never agreed to purchase.

When we contacted Clover to dispute the fraudulent charges and return the equipment, they:

Refused to provide a return address or RMA number
Gave us the runaround with customer service
Have not been forthcoming in rectifying this situation
Continue to hold us responsible for charges from their fraudulent reseller

The Issue: Clover allows predatory third-party resellers like Riverside to operate under their brand name, using illegal sales tactics to trap small businesses. When victims try to resolve the fraud, Clover provides no support and continues to pursue payment.

Warning to small businesses: Be extremely cautious with ANY Clover reseller. Verify everything in writing, never sign anything under pressure, and know that Clover will not protect you from their resellers' fraudulent practices.

We are still seeking resolution and would appreciate Clover contacting us directly at Heritage Christian Daycare to arrange equipment return and cancellation of these fraudulent charges.

I needed a POS system for my small…

I needed a POS system for my small business. For the midsize device is ended up costing 37.89 a month. This did not include internet which I think was around $20 month more. So to use the device you need to connect it to the WiFi on your phone. The device didn’t hold charge well. Money took 3-4 days to post to your account after the processing fee. The customer service is horrible, the rep I got hooked up with never got back to me once I was enrolled and having trouble. He didn’t answer his phone messages. So I called customer service and they referred me back to the original rep who wasn’t responding. Very hard to get help. Got two random $37 dollar charges over some shady “tax” situation. Took me $533 to cancel. They still haven’t sent my return receipt. Would not recommend unless you do a lot of business with cards.

Stay as far away as you can from Clover…

Stay as far away as you can from Clover POS and, more specifically, MerchantOne as the merchant services for Clover POS!

Here’s my story:
On Clover’s direct website, I requested a quote to use their POS services as my small business was considering switching from another popular payment processor. I was contacted by a sales rep who I was told was with Clover (spoiler: she wasn’t - she is with MerchantOne and this was not disclosed). This sales rep painted a beautiful picture of low percentage rates (.29% for debit and up to 1.55% for credit) and promised that the service could do everything I wanted - a custom domain, an ecommerce site, inventory tracking, barcode scanner implementation, etc at no extra cost. She would always be our point of contact, and she was so nice! And, guess what?! They have a half off rebate on their hardware, too! Sounds pretty good, right?

So, I signed on and was excited to get the ball rolling - I started researching how to add my products, etc in the Clover system and ran across several videos stating that there are some predatory merchant providers for Clover out there, so watch out! They will often promise things that are not true, trick you by not disclosing shady business practices, etc. My heart sinks and my head spins as I think “well, I hope they’re a good one…”. They aren’t.

I began reading countless heartbreaking reviews of other small business owners having such awful things done to them as: unapproved debits from their checking account, % rates being completely different from what they were told/advertised, the company coming after them for insane cancellation fees, customer “support” laughing in their face for being “stupid enough to sign a contract”, even so far as one business who had over $50 THOUSAND DOLLARS withheld from them.

I then looked into the promises I was given. EVERY ONE OF THEM WAS A LIE.
I could NOT have a custom domain
An ecommerce site, inventory and barcode scanner were only available if you downloaded additional apps (with additional monthly fees, of course)
The percentage rates are “low” because you have to charge them to the customer. They actually charge MORE than other POS systems with this taken into consideration. In addition, they will use a backdoor process to say that every transaction is “unsecured” which charges 3+% on top of the customer’s fee.
The sales rep will not, in fact, be your point of contact after signing the contract - you will have to contact support, which is near impossible.
I asked several times if there was anything we had to fulfill to get the rebate, which she said no to - turns out it was a 36 month contract with a cancellation fee - verbiage for which was buried in the document in small text - never disclosed and not in ANY of the proposals she sent me.

At this point I knew this service was 100% not for me and that I had been scammed into signing a misleading contract. So, here were my next steps:

I went to my credit union and had my bank account frozen/account number changed
I froze my credit card and reported theft to get a new number and card
I refused delivery of the hardware that had been sent to me (to the wrong address mind you, because they couldn’t even get that right)
I sent a letter of termination to the customer support emails (which I had to find myself as my sales rep refused to respond to my requests for them)
I sent a letter of termination to Clover Network LLC - 415 N Mathilda Ave Sunnyvale, CA 94086 via certified mail
I sent a letter of termination to MerchantOne 524 Arthur Godfrey Rd 3rd Floor Miami Beach, FL 33140 via certified mail
I reported them to the Better Business Bureau
Wrote a letter to the Attorney General - I am in Michigan; the resource will be different for each state.
To note: Clover has several class action lawsuits filed against them for predatory practices, misleading sales people and unlawful fees.

They secretly and continuously make extra charges. Customer service cannot explain the charges and also lies. When you send emails, they do not respond at all. It is a company completely focused on scamming people. Even though I paid nothing, they sent me second-hand devices twice. When I wanted to close my account, they charged me as if they had sent brand-new devices. I am now trying to get my money back through my bank.

Seems impossible to close the account once they have your banking information

I started the process of trying to cancel the service back in November the beginning of November because when I add up all of the fees together, it’s a lot more expensive than other processors. After two months of trying to get it canceled, being back-and-forth by both email and phone, I still got a notice that they were charging my account for the monthly service fee again this month. So again, I spent half a day on the phone, trying to get it taken care of. They did not give any explanation why it still wasn’t canceled after all of this, but just said it would be escalated in 24 hours. There’s nothing that can be done about the fees. They’re already charging, though they will return them after the fact. This is unacceptable. It should not take two months, lots of hours, etc to cancel an account. Companies like this give Business a bad name.

Once they have your bank account number, they will steal your money.

This company is the worse do not use them!!! One star is too much. When considering a company just try to call the customer service line and you will wait on hold forever. But the biggest concern is, they will steal money out of your account by charging you ridiculous fees that you don’t know of and after you cancel the account, they will still try to take your money. They are complete scam. I beg you to use square it is a much better company. They are far more honest, fast customer service, and a better all-around company. Clover should be investigated by the Attorney General and shut down.

Be cautious when signing the POS/Merchant Services

I hate to write this review, but I am extremely dissatisfied with Clover service. I was new to business, so I approached a Clover sales guy. He explained that devices are included, and there is no monthly fee; they charge only the merchant service fee, such as credit/debit card processing fees. Unfortunately, my business was not performing well, so I decided to sell it. And when I was trying to close my account, I discovered that I am under contract for services and Equipment. Merchant service, you can cancel the PAYING EARLY TERMINATION FEE OF $550, before 30 Months, but after 30 months $50 for each step down month. And for equipment, there is no option; you must pay a monthly fee until the end of the contract, regardless of whether you are in business or not. Additionally, once the contract is over, after paying $1260 over 36 months, you need to return the device to them.  If you could buy it, it would be about $500 (the model which I was using). For me, they charged an early termination fee $550, even though I canceled my account in the 35th Month, it is supposed to be $50. I am fighting for justice alongside Clover. Please be cautious when signing a contract with any payment Gateway or merchant services, even if they claim it is free. Obtain a simple written statement from the company. What is free? What is included and what is not, and what is the monthly fee that covers, and what are the early termination fees.

If I could give below a one star I…

If I could give below a one star I would. What went wrong is they would not deposit funds from my customers according to their own time frame and now they're holding $28,000 hostage for 60 days before returning it to my customer. Customer service over the phone is a joke. You can't get a hold of anybody that can actually make something reasonably happen. They accuse me of fraud and a simple phone call to the person that sent the funds would resolve the issue. Instead, they made me jump through tons of hoops and still shut down my account with no notification. No phone calls. I am done with collecting credit card payments from customers. Run for your life from these companies that just don't give a crap.

Complete fraud. Stole our money

Stay far away from this credit card processing company. We have recently been ripped off of $7000 from this company. We have filed a law suit and filed numerous complaints with numerous agencies. We made a deposit on December 22 and they refused to put the money in our account. We were told by one of their employees that they do this to all their customers, and sometimes they spend the money themselves. This company needs to be investigated and shut down.

Bad Customer Service

I called in today with a simple question for an explanation of the fees that I am being charged. I was placed on hold for 30 minutes and rep never came back. I immediately called back and got a different rep and experienced the same. NO ONE CAN ANSWER A SIMPLE QUESTION on the fees that I am being charged. I am now on hold again to escalate this issue. Spoke to a supervisor and still no resolution to my question regarding the fees that I am being billed. So now a specialist will call me back in 24-48 hours. I am so disappointed. This is totally unexceptable!!! I have been with you for several years but will be searching for a new POS company. I will be passing this poor service experience on to my colleagues whom also use clover. A total waste of my time waste today. Lastly, you stated that I could give my experience in a survey at the end of the call. Of course that never happened. So much for a customer service!
