CheckMEND is a service that helps the public and traders to avoid buying stolen property. We prevent over £35m per month of stolen property from being traded. Consumers are always at risk when buying used or refurbished property; a CheckMEND search before you buy can help you avoid a nasty surprise later. A CheckMEND report will alert whoever performed the search (retailers, corporations, insurers, police or members of the public) to the item’s history and status. You may purchase a used item that works for months or years, but when you try to sell it to a responsible trader, their check with us shows it was stolen before you bought it. This proactive crime prevention doesn’t always make us popular, but it does mean we’re doing the right thing. In the unlikely event that a record reported to us is incorrect, we provide full support to resolve it with the provider. Please, don’t leave a bad review because you didn’t like a result over which we have no influence. If you engage with our support team, we will always try to help.

Refuse to correct bad information

This company operates with a completely unethical business model. They accept reports of lost or stolen IMEIs from mobile providers without any verification that the IMEI is associated with one of that provider's customers. They then they provide this unverified data to other companies who use it to block mobile phones with listed IMEIs. They provide no way to correct mistakes short of contacting the provider who reported the bad information. A provider who can be in a different country and may be unwilling to correct their mistake.

I was blocked from having my phone repaired by Apple because of a checkMEND record. After contacting checkMEND, I was told that my IMEI was reported as lost or stolen by a mobile provider in Nicaragua. I have never been to Nicaragua, and neither has my phone, which I purchased directly from Apple in the UK. I provided checkMEND with proof of this, and their only response was to say that I needed to contact this mobile provider in Nicaragua. I had a friend who speaks Spanish attempt to resolve the issue with the Nicaraguan mobile provider, whose response was that this can only be resolved in person at one of their stores in Nicaragua. So according to them, I would need to fly to Nicaragua to resolve this error that they made.

It is completely ridiculous that checkMEND has absolutely no procedure for correcting errors in their database. They are well aware that their database is used to block phones, so they have a responsibility to correct bad data given evidence thereof. Instead, they refuse to consder provided evidence and deny all responsibility by saying that it is up to the provider who has given them bad data to correct any errors. If (as in my case) this is a provider in a foreign country operating in a foreign language with whom one has no business relationship, it is pretty much impossible to get a correction. CheckMEND are aware of this, but they refuse to do anything about it.

Exceptional Tool

Pay less than the price of a coffee for peace of mind and to find out if the phone you are paying on ebay, (in my case £700), is clean, not stolen, and most of all not tied to a contract that someone else might not honour the payments in the next couple of years.
Don't bother with free sites, the ads drive you mad and page constantly jumps, and not as comprehensive.

I’ve even had email correspondence from O2 themselves who have advised this is not blacklisted! Muzuma Mobile are now about to destroy my device due to not being able to remove the red flag that apparently is on my phone! Which is lies!! do not trust this company!! We should all know about this service

I had never heard of CheckMEND before today. The service was easy to use and the search results were comprehensive. If pays to keep detailed notes of your old devices even when you’ve upgraded to a new device.

AVOID THIS COMPANY!!

Much like other reviews on here... I'm selling my Apple Watch Ultra to MusicMagpie and been advised by them that they are unable to pay for my device or return it to me, as CheckMEND have red flagged the device due to it being lost or stolen etc... I've been given 28 days to contact CheckMEND to resolve this and send proof of ownership. I have since submitted proof of ownership multiple times via email and have been completely ignored on 5 occasions - you can only contact them via email as they don't have a customer phone number. MusicMagpie will not pay me for my device or even return it to me until this red flag has been removed. I'm now days away from having them recycle my device for free, which means I will be both losing my device and also out of pocket through no fault of my own. I half wonder if both CheckMEND and MusicMagpie work together on this and that is a complete scam - I will NEVER use either company again through this terrible experience!!

Reply from CheckMEND

Hi Matthew,

We’re really sorry to hear about the frustration this has caused. We’ve checked our system and can’t find any support tickets under your name or email address, so it’s possible your messages haven’t reached us. Please contact us directly at support@checkmend.com so we can review your case as quickly as possible.

To clarify, CheckMEND operates independently of MusicMagpie, and any red flag shown on a device is based on information supplied by trusted third parties such as networks, insurers, or law enforcement—not by us directly.

Once we receive your information and proof of ownership, we’ll do everything we can to help get this resolved swiftly.

Kind regards,
The CheckMEND Team
