Canopy is a parental control app which uses AI technology to block explicit content, even on websites and social platforms which are otherwise acceptable. It is also used by adults who want to give themselves a cleaner internet experience and manage screen time.

I'm on a free trial of their product. It seemed to be working well, but I've come across serious flaws including the inability to scan WebP images which are becoming more common nowdays, and a total failure to filter the firefox browser after it was re-installed. After blocking firefox entirely the night before to prevent its usage it was available again the next day, even after updating the settings in the child app. I needed to manually re-block it again in the canopy app.
After raising these issues with tech support you would think that they'd respond with some urgency as these are failing of their product. However, there is no acknowledgement that emails have been received and no automatically generated ticket number when you contact them which isn't a great sign.
For a company with an AI filter, you'd think they'd have an AI chatbot or a real-life chat to assist with queries. Not everyone who uses their US-based service lives in the USA and can give them a call.
I really hope they look at addressing their customer service issues. Potential customers won't consider becoming paying subscribers if the product experience isn't great during the free trial.
I had a bad experience with them not replying to emails after 5 days and the phone not being answered after problems on my PC after hibernation, and problems with banking apps and payment checkouts. They did try to ring me back today, and I've just finally got through to them.
I've now managed to have a good technical discussion about my problems, and they say that their support issues are a temporary overload that has happened in the last week. Time will tell.
Tried the app for 4 months.
First of all, Canopy advertises that they block sexual content on social media, but they do not. It's a standard porn blocking app just like any other.
When I wanted to remove a device I no longer had access to (because the phone had NOT been reset and Canopy had NOT been uninstalled on the device) they were able to remove the device from my account no problem. Well, when this happened a 2nd time the support guy told me it was impossible to remove the device from my account unless Canopy was uninstalled from the child device. We went back and forth with this over email and over the phone for so long and the guy was RUDE. Kept asking me "so what's the problem if you've cancelled your subscription?" I said they did it before and he kept saying it was impossible when I know for a fact it is NOT.
Another thing to know about the app is that if someone goes into settings on the child device on an iPhone, they can keep the app from running in the background, which would basically just turn it off without uninstalling it. So it's an easy loophole.
Lastly, when the person finally uninstalled the app from the computer on the child device, I removed it and asked support to close out my account. They responded with "Your account will still exist, so you can sign in and sign up for Canopy if you will feel like using our service again one day." They did finally delete my account after that.
