Great customer service

Great customer service after we had a tough cut of picanha in our first order.
After I gave Basco feedback Miles contacted me directly and offered a voucher so I could try the same or a different cut of meat.
Went for the sirloin roast which was tender and tasty. Also ordered cochinillo, piquillo peppers, croquetas which were all really good.

Quarter suckling pig

Quarter suckling pig. We had this yesterday, had friends over for a Spanish meal. Have to say it smelled wonderful cooking but a real disappointment on eating. Very little meat, very, very fatty & nothing really on the leg, taste was indifferent. Very disappointed & NOT cheap!

Very expensive

I ordered the quarter suckling pig which with P&P came to £61. That makes it crazy expensive. The skin didn't crackle up as much as I expected but the taste was excellent, just a shame that it was for 4 people so small portions. It was very well packed and delivered on time but I think it would be far more cost effective to buy the boneless half piglet next time.

So, so disappointing!

I have been to Spain many times and have never had a bad steak so when I stumbled across this site, and everything was on offer I ordered £300 of meat of which close on £200 was for 4 rib steaks, 2 Galician rib and 2 Rubia Gallego.

We tried a Galician rib steak first.
It was absolutely totally inedible! and we did try. I think even a meat grinder would have gone blunt because it was so so tough and no amount of chewing (and I do have all my own teeth) made it fit to swallow.
I sent Basco a photo of the chewed inedible meat and complained and after some back and forth Basco refunded the cost. As I said to them, had they been local I would have sent every thing back for a refund in accordance with the Sale of Goods Act - Goods "Not as described"
We then tried a Rubia Gallega steak.
This was slightly better in that approximately 50 percent was edible but the other half was the same as the first steak - inedible! So tough, really really tough and so again no amount of chewing would do the job.
It was actually quite bizarre in that one side of the steak was edible and the other side was not!
The best way I can describe this is as if it was a T-bone and the meat to the right of the middle bone was edible and the meat to the left was not.
I note that one reviewer had a similar experience.
I emailed Basco but they have not deigned to reply.
We now have 2 more steaks in the freezer which based on our experience so far will be fed to the foxes in our garden. And as much as we like to feed the foxes we do not usually spend circa £50 per kilo to feed them.
Most reviews on the site were good which I find a little strange as they did not gel with my experience at all. Such that I am wondering if I got the same steaks as other customers were supposedly reviewing.
Is my unfortunate experience just bad luck? At these prices there should be consistent quality in supply which is clearly not the case.
I will not be spending any more money with this company.
Given the lack of any response from basco I have decided to update this review as and when I try the other meats I purchased.
We just tried the La Grima Iberica.
Basco say "beautiful, flavourful cut of pork that melts in your mouth – Grilled medium rare, it has a juicy, tender bite and a full mouthwatering flavour that speaks of its free-range acorn fed source".
To say this is a misleading description of the meat that we tried is an understatement to say the least.
The meat we received and cooked looked like scrag end cuts ranging in size from an inch to 4-5 inches long and thin. Totally different to the photo on their web site which looked much thicker and chunkier.
I am a competent cook and the meat was cooked as Basco suggested.
"Juicy, tender bite and a full mouthwatering flavour" It Was NOT.
Whilst it was edible, it was a million miles from Basco's description. And SO NOT worth the price!
I am very tempted to refer them to the Trading Standards authority for selling food "not as described" which is an offense under the Sale Of Goods Act.

Is there anybody there?

I placed an order with Basco Fine Foods and have repeatedly try to contact them via telephone to discuss delivery dates.
I have tried multiple times over two days but continue to hear the same automated response over all five extensions. “ The extension you are calling is unreachable at the moment"
I wish I had looked at the other reviews before placing my order.
Appalling customer service.

Consistently Blame DPD!

Consistently Blame DPD!
Shocking amateurs, they have a total inability to package products securely and looking at previous reviews their scapegoat is DPD! Why would they continue to use the same courier Company if in their opinion they are really that bad? I order numerous products, delivered by DPD and have never had a problem. I cut my finger open on a smashed jar of olives, the external box was not damaged and it also had no fragile stickers on it anyway, so am puzzled how the courier company could be to blame? I provided pictures to prove I was genuine and just asked for a full refund of the olives a mere £5.50 and received £4.95! The response when I queried was because I had a Black Friday discount, really!! My order was in excess of £200, thanks for your customer care. I responded I was disappointed, still didn’t receive a full refund of the smashed jar but a reluctant offer of a £10 voucher off my next order, never again would I order from this penny pinching bunch, plenty of more professional Companies offering the same produce. Disgusting attitude!

Reply from Basco

Good morning Susan,

Thank you for taking the time to relay your feedback, we are a family business who have been operating for over 12 years and we care deeply about service and customer satisfaction, I'm genuinely sorry you cut yourself on the olives Jar.

With regards to DPD and In the spirit of honesty, DPD are arguably the best within the market however over the last month they have experienced significant issues within their network following black Friday and overcapacity which has caused operational issues which they are trying their best to improve.

We know this is a temporary issue they are experiencing and we support them however with regard to your olives broken we can not never truly know why / how they were damaged but we make every effort to ensure all our goods leave as safe as possible within the confines of our protective industry leading packaging.

Please could you call me at your next convenience as I would appreciate the opportunity to personally talk to you and hopefully offer a personal apology on behalf of Basco.

Yours Faithfully
Miles

Unreliable and no communication

Ordered some iberico pork from them with a week's notice and paid for their most expensive delivery service to ensure it arrived in time for a party.

No communication from Basco apart from order confirmation. Called up on the day of delivery because I'd recieved no dispatch or time slot from DPD, was told there were some issues with DPD and that it would be delayed by 1 day and dispatched that afternoon. Still no email at 4:30pm so I rang again to check it was still arriving - I was told yes for sure and was upgraded to AM delivery the next day. I was told the order was packed and waiting for pick up.

I recieved no dispatch email that evening either. Called up today to be told for some reason it didn't leave the warehouse and it'll be sent today for sure. That wasn't going to work for us so I asked for a full refund instead. No legitimate reason was given, blame was placed on DPD despite us recieving numerous other DPD deliveries just fine that week. No apology given either. I would avoid for any orders where you need something for a specific date.

Poor Communication, Absent Delivery

*UPDATE 02/12/2022: Miles from Basco reached out to me following this review and was keen to discuss the situation in order to understand and explain. I was informed that DPD were at fault for the lack of deliveries this week as they had stopped accepting perishables, however Miles acknowledged that this should have been communicated better with us as customers.

Whilst we did not receive our delivery this time (as it would arrive past the date it was required) we will be giving Basco another try in the future.

*ORIGINAL REVIEW*

We selected Basco to supply some Iberico pork ahead of a small family celebration. We were let down.

Basco not only failed to dispatch and deliver the item for the scheduled day, they also did not notify us that this had changed. When we reached out, we were ensured that the delivery had been upgraded to AM delivery and would be there the next day. When no dispatch email was received, we reached out again and were advised it was all packed, ready to go, and would be with us the next day.

It did not dispatch. It did not arrive. Again, we received no communication to explain this.

They claim DPD is the issue, but there are other couriers that could have been used. This also does not excuse the complete absence of any communication effort.

To say we are disappointed is putting it mildly. Consider other suppliers if your delivery is time sensitive.

Delicious

Just returned from a Tenerife break where my partner enjoyed a dish which included a waygu black pudding. He has looked everywhere for just that one and couldn't find it until I came across Basco. I ordered the black pudding and a Spanish black pudding too. The Web page was easy to follow. I placed an order and thought delivery was a bit much until it was delivered. My order came in a box which protected the goods but also great ice packs which justifies delivery charge. He has said that the puddings were just like he had while we were away and I will order again especially as he has raved about them to family. Delivery was quick and I was kept informed of delivery date. Highly recommended

No more polystyrene!

Recently bought large amount of Basco’s croquetas on offer. I was so delighted when they arrived without the polystyrene boxes that they have used up until now. A great move Basco.
As always, their products are delicious.

Fantastic service

I placed an order with Basco last week. I needed to speak with customer services for advice and they were really helpful. I received an email on Monday telling me my order would be delivered the next day. Then at gone 10pm on Monday I got a message from the delivery company that there had been a problem at the depot, and so the delivery date was now Wednesday. Am my order included fresh and frozen meat I was really concerned. But Basco replaced the package they had dispatched in Monday with a fresh one that they took to the delivery depot yesterday. This meant that my food arrived in perfect condition. I cannot fault the quality of this service. Beyond this, the quality of the food and drink that they sell is amazing.
Basco, you are brilliant!

Small mistake made but great customer service

Had a bit of a hiccup with my order getting mixed up with someone else's however Jack / Jacques (didn't quite hear his name, apologies) was very apologetic on the phone and rectified it immediately so I would still order from Basco again. Hugh quality products. Thank you!

MUY BIEN!

I have used BASCO several times during Covid lockfowns and restrictions and it has been one of the few highlights of that time. Excellent packaging, prompt delivery and great quality produce. Well worth keeping an eye on sales and offers as they tend to be genuine rather than the more usual online "sale". Highly recommended.
