What I like about ArtistWorks and Tony Trischka

I have thoroughly enjoyed Tony Trischka as a teacher, and it's pretty easy to get around in ArtistWorks' website. I have one tiny negative, but not enough to reduce the 5 star rating: I found it a bit difficult to be able to turn off "automatic billing" which I hate from any website (I've been burned before by others...fool me once, and it's your fault, but fool me twice, and it's my fault). At any rate, I finally did figure out how to turn off Auto Billing, and everything seems to be working great. The best thing imo is that I'm truly learning how to play an instrument and feel the quality of the instruction is just great. Tony is a really good teacher!

I LOVE this site

I LOVE this site. Tony Trischka is an energetic and thoughtful teacher who is very encouraging. The lessons are doable and lots of extras, such as interviews. I have been on it for eight years. I enjoy connecting with people from all over the world.

I'd give my guitar instructor Paul…

I'd give my guitar instructor Paul Gilbert five stars and more, if I could. He is so incredibly positive and encouraging. I have learned so much in such a short time and look forward to learning more. The price is very reasonable for what you get, and the more you put into it, the more you get in return. It's just the site itself that needs improvement. Artistworks, if you're listening, hire some professional web designers and update your site. With over 6,000 lessons from Mr. Gilbert alone you need a serious tagging and searching system, so you can search by song or by guitar technique or other attribute. Of course some lessons cover multiple songs or techniques. There is also a message feature where you can chat with other students, which is nice but the messages do not have dates/times and scroll by quickly unless you check them every day. Plus there's no way for Mr. Gilbert to keep his messages up top, instead the get lost in the shuffle. On the plus side I have never experienced an outage or difficulty uploading or viewing videos. Lastly the default is to automatically renew and bill your credit card but you can change this in the settings.

Hello Bob,

Thanks for your honest feedback here about your time at ArtistWorks. The good news is that the tech team is in the process of improving a lot of elements of the website, which will make the user experience a lot better. I've included your comments here for them to review and consider as well, since these are good points you've raised! In regards to the Shout box messages, you can see the date/time if you hover over them. Also last year we did implement a tagging system for the lessons which will hopefully continue to improve the search ability. Unfortunately, there's just still a lot more tagging to do since there are so many videos in the Rock Guitar School. We welcome and encourage the students to tag as many as they can, it will certainly help! In the meantime, thanks for your patience while we continue to improve the student experience.

Sincerely,

Adam

I have received great responses and…

I have received great responses and personalised advice, which I really enjoy. This is a really effective and useful way to improve if one puts the time in and really invests in it. Initially, I was a bit confused as to how everything worked; but it was quickly cleared up by their multiple tutorials. Overall, this is a great program with good materials to help one improve.

Tried to purchase 4 months of lessons…ripoff

Tried to purchase 4 months of lessons for the price of three as advertised. Charged much more than expected because of an auto-renew subscription that charged my credit card every 3 months with no notification. I will never use this website again.

Great value and challenging online lessons

I started out in Keith Wyatt's blues school. He is a wonderful teacher and his online curriculum is packed with challenging lessons. I let my subscription lapse a bit for personal reasons. Recently, I signed up for Jazz guitar lessons with Dave Stryker. The format allows a student to submit a video of his/her playing and get feedback in the form of a video exchange from the instructor. It's a great way for online lessons and it's challenging for beginners up to more advanced players.

The Martin Taylor School at ArtistWorks

The content of the Martin Taylor school is wonderful. After learning to navigate the site, I found an amazing amount of information and instruction for a wide range of ability levels. Just getting to watch a musician of that caliber play in such a relaxed and intimate situation is worth the cost of subscription. Highly recommended.

ArtistWorks is an Excellent Resource: Brian Sutton is the Real Deal!

I am a casual user of Artist Works because I use it as a resource to supplement other instruction and playing opportunities I have. As a result, I haven't participated in the communal online experience. But I do find the website to be very useful with resources and information that are helpful and easy to find. Having taught in an online environment, I know effectively communicating with students can be a formidable challenge. But Brian Sutton does a very good job of explaining techniques and strategies so they are more easily understood. Frankly, the fact that he spends as much time as he does on submitted videos is pretty remarkable, especially considering the wide range of ability and apptitude of his students.
I have recommended Artist Works to a number of people because I think it can be a valuable tool and I'll continue to do so.

Invaluable

Invaluable, comprehensive, enlightening beyond words. Tony Trischka teaches more than just "how" on the banjo - he is an encyclopedia of bluegrass history. And his interviews with some of the great banjo heroes/legends are fascinating! Thanks!

Need more basic instructions

As a beginner at guitar I find these programs often disappointing. The instructors are obviously talented but an artist is not necessarily a good teacher. The programs lack continuity and there are huge gaps in the curriculum for beginners like myself. In the country guitar there are many errors in the tabs. More basic instruction would be helpful.
