Superior EV insurance from Apia

This is what I recently posted on the Electric Viking Facebook page: "A recent Sam podcast detailed that his insurance company did not honour the repair of his EV. To make matters worse, they dragged their feet in returning his deposit for the repair.
By contrast, I made a claim with Apia to repair my ATTO 3. They not only repaired the vehicle perfectly, and with grace, they gave me an EV replacement vehicle while the car was being repaired.
EV users, which insurance company would you rather be with?" (Reg Polson)

Shocking customer service

This organisation uses offshore call centres in Asia making the claims process difficult due to the lack of English understanding. They are polite but very hard to understand. They misinterpret information and send out ambiguous communication.
I wouldn't even give them a 1 star rating, a minus 10 would be more appropriate.

I am so angry and disappointed in Apia…

I am so angry and disappointed in Apia they are ripping older Australians off I hadn’t finished talking been insured with them for some time when my husband past away I sold the big house and bought into an over 55 village in Mickleham just a small 3 bedroom 2 bathroom open plan living no bells and whistles the first years they insured me for $470 thousand and $42thousand for contents which I was paying $74 per month I received my renewal 2 weeks ago and to my disgust and confusion it had gone up 400% to $308 per month so I called for an explanation I was told no that is correct the new price is what I have to pay I pointed out that others in the village are with Apia and they were not in any way paying that amount of money so I shopped around and guess what I got on to aami I am now insured for more cover and for much less then Apia they came in at $757 for the year so I suggest you all give Apia a very wide berth do not deal with them

Our claim

I have seen all the bad reviews and I am surprised as our experience last year with a storm damage claim was very good. From the time we put the claim until settlement was an acceptable time, and at all times Apia was good to deal with. I was quite happy to renew our insurance with Apia.

Try and make claims as difficult as possible!

I feel extremely fortunate to have found how bad this company was within a short period of time, do not rely on APIA.
Been insured with a couple of company's for over 10 years without having to make a claim, unfortunately was with APIA for a couple of months and had a storm damage claim.
The company goes out of its way to delay, complicate the claims procedure and leaves you feeling in the wrong for making a claim in the first place.
They tried to bump up the excess by $500 by saying the house was unoccupied when it wasn't and even asked for a months phone and text messages from me and my wife to prove we were at home!?
On top of this they gave us a long list of things to do which delayed the claim even more
In the end I cancelled the claim, paid for it myself, which is what they were hoping I think and then cancelled my policy with APIA the same day.
They deal with pensioners and try and confuse and prolong an already stressful time.
Avoid or else find out at your peril whenever you actually need to make a claim.
Would not of even given them 1 star if I had that option!

Not even worth a star

Not even worth a star. I had an accident, not at fault. It took them 3 weeks to call me to arrange repairs. I dropped my car off for repairs, made my way to pick a hire car from hertz. There was no hire car for me despite a booking being made for me. Hertz had 12 bookings and only 4 cars to offer. Stranded at Hertz multiple phone calls to apia requested to speak to upper management was ignored. Asked them to book & pay for a hire car else where they wouldn't. I have had to put up over $1300 for a hire car apia should have provided me. This wasted a whole day and has inconvenienced me. Do not recommend. I have made multiple complaints & have not been contacted or reimbursed.

Australian Pensioner Insurance agency Scammers.

MY Husband and I have had Home and Contents with Apia for 5 years for one of those years we had to live in a rental home while our new home was being built and for that year we took out Contents insurance only.Every other year Apia sent us a renewal invitation to renew our home and contents insurance and urged us to update our Home building insurance coverage as well as our contents which we did and increased both Home and contents slightly. Apia then provided us with a new quote and we we accepted the quote they reneged on the quote hypocritically thanking us for our loyalty but then stated unfortunately the renewed quote we were given when we were invited by Apia to review our current home and contents values and update to suit our requirements he stated Apia can’t afford to honour the quote for updated home and contents . As a result of this and other lies that their so called appalling customer service members have treated us with ie: sending usHome and Contents updated policies then when we check the contents they state No you don’t have contents then further insult by the fake apology : We understand it can be confusing to receive a renewal notification that refers to “home and contents.” Please note that the renewal invitation is system-generated and uses general labelling terminology. This wording does not confirm that both covers are active on the policy; it is a standard format applied to renewal communications.
DONT trust APIA! we’ve now been told in emails that for five years we’ve been paying for Home and Contents and receiving the policies documents to confirm but apparently they were “standard format applied to renewals. A very fraudulent company.

Massive increases after 1st year.

Insured with APIA for my Mum's place after abandoning GIO for being too expensive and got a good rate in 2025. When the premium was due for renewal, it increased from around $2400 to $3250. A quick search found AAMI to be offering a very similar policy for $2300, which I took up. Oh and APIA will spam you like crazy when they suspect you aren't going to renew. I am not one of those people who rings my insurer and says "can I have a better deal?". If you haven't given me your best deal on renewal, then you clearly don't need my business. I was under the misapprehension that APIA was set up to be a bit fairer to pensioners. Not a chance!

Woeful..

Woeful... I would actually consider APIA to be a scam... If you make a claim, you HAVE to pay your excess up front before you even know the cost of the repairs. They will make money off you if your repairs cost less than the excess. That is criminal behaviour. Avoid at all costs.

Online payment double dipping

There was a problem with their online payment system. When paying my car insurance renewal 2 payments were deducted from my bank account. Trying to get a refund for one payment has been difficult (still not recieved). Their last response was the it must be held up in my banks processing and could take 5-10 business days. I checked with my bank and they haven't had anything submitted to them. Different customer service people give different excuses.
They cannot be trusted. Stay away

The worst please stay away prefer Budget or AAMI even RACV! Pricy but worth the service. APIA completely ignored us l. had a car accident usually you are assigned a case manager to follow up call you update you on mechanic progress. Didn’t hear from them in 4 weeks neither did the mechanic!! Just left on your own to sort your car why bother paying for insurance!! Terrible service leave them alone!!

DUMB & FNG RUDE

I dont know who the bright spark/ pencil pusher who came up with the idea of ringing me when my account is near due.
I find this practice to be extremely rude, to the point that if APIA rings me again about up coming payment i will seek alternative cover.

Beware..APIA car insurance

I wouldn't even give them 1 star but it did not allow me to give 0. Do not go with this insurance also under the umbrella of Suncorp. Had a car accident with kangaroo's. The claim has been in the system for 6 weeks. No one knew where the car was at first. Every person l spoke to gave me misleading information. Found my car was in a holding bay for 4 weeks as they did not have someone to assess the vehicle. I spoke to people that could not speak English, did not know what their policies were. I could not speak to a Supervisor/Manager to escalate as either they were not available or no one way in the office. Eventually after 6 weeks the came to the conclusion the my car was a write-off, but l had to pay the access and pay out a year of insurance also, even though the car was a write-off. After numerous phone calls
not one person went above and beyond. Totally no customer service. This insurance company is certainly not their for Pensioners nor any other customer. Yes you try to read all of your policy, but their is always something you miss. They would not know what good faith or looking after the customer was. It's all about money. I have never, ever dealt with a company like them. BEWARE.

Would give them zero stars if possible

Would give them zero stars if possible. Didn’t cover a leak in my bathroom and when cancelling my policy I had to wait for over 10minutes for them to cancel it. They love taking my money and keeping it but when it’s time to give it back or pay it out they don’t. Don’t recommend. Switched to Allianz, am covered for a lot more and saving over $1500 a year

Poor communication

Poor communication.
1.0 Asked to call an alternative number as unable to answer the phone at work..Claims officer rings incorrect number continually.
2.0 Receive a txt notifying that they well call in 5 minutes - 45 minutes later they call one one occasion. Will call in 45 minutes, 5 minutes later APIA call,
3.0 Details of claim asked for on 2 separate occasions regardless of already giving these details.
4.0 Incorrect bank account details entered for refund by APIA and funds not deposited into correct account.
5.0 We now have to wait for the funds to bounce back before they will reissue, even though the emails asking for bank details and the remittance are clearly different.
6.0 Unprofessional beyond belief.

I had to renew my green slip over the phone , as I lost my renewal notice , thus I am an existing client with APIA, The lady that attended to me and I could not get her name was extremly rude , the call was made on the 19 Jan approx around 7 pm . She validated my account with APIA , yet continued toask me to spell my street address etc,,,

She had an american accent and most times I could not understand , she made the entire transaction extremley frustrating , I was almost going to stop the call and call another supplier,

I asked to speak to her supervisor and she said "why" and we dont have a supervisor .

we finally got teh green slip something that is so easy yet provided to extremely complicated with a person at APIA being exremely difficult to talk to

720 clicks

Have to enter my birthdate to claim or to send a complaint. The only way to enter the dob is to scroll through every month and year. It took more than 720 clicks to scroll to 1965! Seriously. Didn't ever receive my policy when I joined. Can't submit a claim online as it turns out because 'someone didn't set it up right'. So then was given a suncorp number to call to ask for my policy to be accessible online. Rang the number and got cut off after pressing a variety of numbers. What a massive shitshow.
