Worst Moving Experience EVER

My experience with American Van Lines & 101 Movers Corp has been extremely disappointing and stressful. I was initially quoted approximately $6,000, paid nearly $4,000 upfront, and was promised clear communication, a pre-move inventory review, dispatch updates, a scheduled pickup time, and delivery within 2–7 days. Instead, I never received the promised inventory call, my estimate increased by more than $2,000 after I was told to itemize plastic-wrapped bundles that I had packaged according to their instructions, and I was pressured to make additional payments to keep my reservation. Pickup was repeatedly rescheduled with little notice, creating significant stress as I was trying to sell my home, move my family, and travel across the country with four pets. The movers who arrived were from a different company, 101 Movers Corp., despite my understanding that no brokers or third parties would be involved, and after my belongings were loaded and the driver left, I was informed that the price had increased yet again. (Currently $8,216 for a 26ft Uhaul from OK to FL.) Since pickup, I have received virtually no meaningful updates regarding the location or status of my shipment. On Day 9, after repeatedly requesting an update, I was told by AVL my truck was being "loaded" even though I personally watched my belongings being loaded from my home 9 days earlier leaving me questioning why my truck was unloaded, where my belongings have been for the last 9 days and why this information was never discussed with me. Communication has been nearly nonexistent and promises made during the sales process have frequently been contradicted. At this point, my calls and messages are being ignored or completely dismissed. I was offered a discount/compensation, however, that reportedly required signing a non-disclosure agreement stating that I could not give an honest review of my experiences. That does not feel like a customer-service resolution; it feels like an attempt to prevent honest feedback. A bribe. Hush-money. At the time of writing, I still have not received my shipment, have zero information about where my belongings are, where they have been and when they will actually arrive. I would never recommend American Van Lines or 101 Movers Corp based on my experiences so far.

NO- LOOK for another company

No - NO and NO- look for another company.
My first time writing such a review. NO look elsewhere.
Underestimated pricing, contracted other local cie to move us. Understaffed, poor packing, delays, broken items ( I know fill a claim right? Take a picture?), poor customer service, delays and U-Haul trucks to move us? Here we are 4 weeks out after our “move” hiring movers to help us clean all the boxes left in the garage or boxes misplaced. The pick up last 14 hours and we had 4 people and 2 of them disappeared for 4-5 hours. I had paid for kitchen packing I ended up doing some of it. The delivery we had 3 people and supposedly the second U-Haul truck ( not even a company truck) broke on highway so 1 disappeared for 7 hours to bring it. They were unloading things at 2 am. And the beds packed were not labeled or packed correctly and so many boxes left in garage. In addition screws from a bookcase disappeared we had to buy , a big garbage bin broken, 3 beautiful plates I carry around for 15 years broken, a plate broken. We’re still paying for other service to help us put boxes where they need to be.
So NO DO NOT TAKE THEM. They are unprofessional unhelpful and cause huge stress and damage. And then to try to get a receipt of what we paid took so many calls. I was invoiced twice! Only one person was helpful over the phone.

🚨 Based on my experience, I would not recommend American Van Lines. Please read this before booking.

If you had a similar experience, document everything and consider filing factual complaints with the BBB, FMCSA, and the appropriate state Attorney General. Consumers can also leave truthful, factual reviews about their experiences. The FTC Consumer Review Fairness Act protects honest reviews from certain standardized gag clauses.

I paid American Van Lines over $10,000 for an interstate move from Colorado to California. I was told AVL worked “all in-house,” which influenced my decision to book. However, the physical move was handled by Excellent Van Lines and other workers. I was not told during the sales process that Excellent Van Lines would physically handle the move.

1. Pickup-day price increase: My estimate rose from about $8,000 to over $10,000 while movers were already inside my home. With our belongings involved and the move underway, it felt extremely high-pressure.

2. Payment methods not listed in my contract: While movers were onsite, we were asked to send thousands of dollars via Venmo. At delivery, we were again directed toward peer-to-peer methods such as Zelle, Cash App, Apple Pay, or cash. AVL later acknowledged by email that we should not have been advised another payment method was needed.

3. Pressure to sign early: The driver repeatedly asked us to sign the Bill of Lading before loading was complete. An AVL coordinator later confirmed by phone and email that it should be signed after loading was complete.

4. Split delivery; second portion arrived after the estimated window: The Bill of Lading listed an estimated April 15–25 delivery window. The first portion arrived April 16. The second portion, containing nearly all furniture other than couches, did not arrive until May 1. The timeline kept changing, and we repeatedly had to chase updates. We were later informed that some items had been placed in storage without clear communication to us.

5. Damage: Both legs of our antique hand-carved solid wood dining table arrived severely broken, with missing pieces, making the table unusable. We photographed the legs at delivery wrapped in only 1–2 layers of taped packing blankets; we did not see boxes or rigid protective packaging around them. Other damaged items included a cabinet/bookcase, two bookshelves, a whiteboard, and a TV bench.

We also documented spilled cleaning products packed with belongings and delicate china packed without individual wrapping. After pickup, we found emptied bottles of health drinks that had been stored in our basement among trash left outside; we had not offered those drinks. During delivery, the truck also broke a large tree branch in front of the property.

AVL relied on released-value coverage in responding to the damage claim. I understand that coverage exists. AVL eventually offered $1,650 total for damage and service/delay issues, then sent a proposed settlement agreement that included language restricting “negative” statements, complaints, and further discussion. I did not sign it.

This is not about one damaged item or one late truck. It is about the full pattern: third-party handling that was not disclosed to me during the sales process, a pickup-day price increase, payment methods not listed in my contract, pressure around signing documents, inconsistent communication, the second delivery arriving after the estimated window, damaged furniture, inadequate packing, and a drawn-out claims process.

I’m sharing this because I wish I had known these risks before booking. Based on my experience, I would not recommend American Van Lines.

Hi Alina,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We regret that you remain dissatisfied with your moving experience and the outcome of our efforts to resolve your concerns.

Throughout this process, American Van Lines conducted a comprehensive review of the matters you raised, including your service concerns, delivery experience, and damage claim. While we respectfully disagree with certain characterizations and conclusions presented in your review, we recognize that your experience did not meet your expectations and understand the frustration that can result when a move involves delays, communication challenges, or damaged items.

Our records reflect that we thoroughly investigated the issues presented, maintained ongoing communication throughout the claims process, and made multiple good-faith efforts to reach an amicable resolution, including extending a final goodwill settlement offer beyond the contractual claim determination. That offer was ultimately declined, and we respect your decision.

Georgia Here We Come

What made the experience great was the people--hands down--the staff. From the top executive to the folks that loaded and unloaded our items--great, great customer service. Pinning down the exact date and time of pick up and delivery was a bit, a tiny bit of a challenge but completely understood. We highly, highly recommend American Van Lines.

Date changes

Date changes, altered contracts, endless phone calls with no help, our good arrived on a different truck thay what it was packed in with no explanation what happened. Worst of all, overcharged by thousands after a bad estimate. Stay away!

Negative 5 stars

If I could give American Van Lines negative stars, I would.
Our experience was defined by poor communication, unclear charges, and a delivery delay of more than three weeks. We rushed across the country to meet our scheduled delivery, only to find out—at the last minute—that our truck wasn’t arriving at all.

From that point on, every update required us to chase the company down. We reached out repeatedly by phone, email, and text, and were consistently given conflicting or misleading information about where our belongings were and when they would arrive. At no point did the company proactively communicate with us.
Even the driver and locally hired unloaders openly told us that the company is disorganized and difficult to work with, which only confirmed what we were experiencing.
Because of the repeated and unexplained delays, we incurred significant additional expenses. The company offered $30 per day in compensation—an amount that doesn’t realistically cover even basic daily costs. Worse, accepting that payment required signing an agreement not to leave a negative review, which we found completely unacceptable.

We declined the offer.

This was a stressful, expensive, and deeply frustrating experience from start to finish. I strongly recommend avoiding this company and choosing a mover that values honesty, accountability, and basic customer service.

Unprofessional and spammy...

After receiving a deluge of automated text messages and phone calls following filling out an online form, I called them to get an estimate. I was on hold for a few minutes, then was told they couldn't do my move and they hung up on me. Very unprofessional and spammy.

Do not hire this company

Do not hire this company. It is a scam. Will lowball you a quote then collect your down payment. Then a few days before your move will call you and because the first person didn’t put a headboard or footboard will triple the price. Then if you cancel they will keep your down payment. Even had a person who worked for them called me on his personal phone a told me this is what they do to people. Do not use this company

Moved from Texas to MA

Moved from Texas to MA. Movers arrived, and price was over double what was quoted. We had no choice to accept to keep time to closing house. Received 2 weeks later than quoted, most boxes crushed things damaged. Claims process is confusing, and very little support.

Do not use American Van Lines

I see a lot of one star reviews, and many common themes.

-They will hold your property as long as they like, regardless of the "promises"/lies that you'll hear from sales. We were in an empty house for over two weeks after the date that was agreed upon months in advance

-They will pay no claims for damages
-They will say anything to get rid of you
-They subcontract all the loaders in many states
-They are just plain unclear about how the work and price things.
-Despite dozens of promises, they've done nothing. Not even formally apologize (one employee did in a way)

This company is a broker

This company is a broker who will give you a price for your move, collect one-half up front, and then sub out your move to a company you would not hire yourself in a million years. The sub collects the other 50% before they will deliver your furniture. American Van Lines keeps the 50% up front money for doing very little except having a phone number and pretty pictures of trucks that will not show up at your house.
My experience was terrible. Nobody showed up on my moving date and numerous calls to American were unanswered or not helpful. I was lied to repeatedly by American employees who told me movers were on the way. Movers did not show up until two and a half days later and they were terrible. I would never have hired them myself.
Be very careful in hiring movers. I was fooled by fancy adds and pictures. This is not what you get from American. You get horrible movers who do the job for half of the price you pay and that is exactly what you get – half of the job you expect.

Moving crew was great. Admin/coordinating team NIGHTMARE!

The crew that actually did our move was incredible. If I could hire them independently, outside of American Van Lines, I would. The administrative aspect of the move was a nightmare. They didn’t dispatch the correct size truck so 10% of our belongings were left behind. When I tried to seek resolution with AVL to help pickup what was left the wanted to charge full rates for an “overflow” move. Ended up having to hire a different company because AVL refused to acknowledge or take responsibility for their error. Will never use them again.

WORST MOVE OF OUR LIFETIME (WE'RE in…

WORST MOVE OF OUR LIFETIME (WE'RE in our 50's)! CONSUMER BEWARE. THEY ARE OVERPRICED AND due to their poor planning and logistics showed up with a truck too small. They did not own the error but said it would be two weeks and cost me an additional $3500 after we had already paid them $12k!! Noone was apologetic. Their system is broken and talking to the driver this has helped multiple times.
They damaged our furniture (tvs, lamps, dressers, desks, tables. They put things back together and stripped our furniture so now we may never get some things back apart. They hired ALL subcontracted help except the driver. The team that showed up at our new home through things everywhere and did not handle anything with TLC. NEVER HAVE WE EVER HAD SO MUCH BROKEN SCRATCHED DAMAGED goods. We were so DONE with the company in the end we didn't even want to file a claim... We just want to shout from the mountain tops how horrible they were on pickup and delivery. WE HAVE NEVER MOVED WITH THIS HORRIBLE OF A CREW. SUBCONTRACTED HELP IS NOT BACKGROUND CHECKED.
