I had a very disappointing experience…



I had a very disappointing experience with American Surplus Inc. I purchased an item for $6,000, and dealing with Rachel, who handled the shipping, was a nightmare. She refused to provide any freight quotes initially, and when I finally asked, she just suggested a company they supposedly work with—without offering any assistance or solutions.

When the item was delivered, the crate was in pieces, and the forklift operator couldn’t even remove the pallet because it was completely trashed. The items inside were bent and damaged. Instead of working with us to resolve the issue—such as issuing a refund or sending replacement parts—Rachel has been unresponsive, giving no updates and refusing to communicate. She even blamed others instead of taking responsibility.

Overall, I would not order from this company again or use the freight service they recommend. Very poor customer service and quality control.

We’re sorry to hear about your experience, but we would like to clarify a few important details. Rachel did not “refuse” to offer you a freight quote — in fact, her initial email to you clearly stated:

“Will you be scheduling your own pickup and sending a BOL, or do you need me to get you a freight quote and put you in touch with a broker? I have included the dimensions of your order for your reference.”

We also want to note that your order was crated and loaded in perfect condition, as confirmed by our photos prior to shipment. Any damage that occurred after pickup would need to be addressed with the freight carrier, as they are responsible for handling the material during transit.

While we understand your frustration, we wish you had reached out to us directly before posting this review. We would have been more than happy to assist you in resolving the issue and arranging replacement parts.

Communication was great

Communication was great, and their turnaround time on a large outdoor cantilever racking system was impressive. Will certainly be looking to American Surplus for future projects.

Great experience

Great experience! Drove down with a U- Haul box truck and they loaded it for me! I was by myself and couldn't pick up the half ton worth of metal grating. The staff was really friendly!

Not a way to run a business

Wish I had read reviews prior to placing order. Slsmn quoted free shipping and 5 - 7 business day ship window, as items were in stock. Confirming order came back FOB shipping point and 7 - 10 business days... and didn't catch the changes.
On the 12th day (today) I want to cancel because they still didn't ship, (but allegedly is ready to ship). They will only give me merchandise credit, not a refund in cash which I pre-paid three weeks ago.
DO NOT BUY FROM THESE FOLKS..
NOT HONORABLE.. and a tad bit slimy.

Your order was placed with full visibility into the terms, including FOB collect shipping and the estimated shipping window of 7–10 business days, which was clearly outlined on the quote right next to the signature line. Our records also indicate that the items were prepared for shipment within the stated time frame, and your request to cancel came after the order was already packed and queued for carrier pickup.

While we strive to accommodate cancellation requests when possible, once an order has entered final processing, our policy—also shared at the time of purchase—offers merchandise credit in lieu of a refund. This is standard practice in many B2B transactions involving order fulfillment.

While we understand frustration can occur when expectations don’t align with reality, we stand by the transparency of our process and communications. Accusations of dishonesty are unwarranted and do not reflect the facts of this transaction.

Quick Response/Easy to Work with

The sales group was quick to respond and pulled together quotes and revised quotes the same day. Everyone from sales, to shipping, to billing was easy to work with and communicated well. Very happy with the results of our order and would engage again!

Purchasing process was great...very dirty parts

The purchasing process was great, very friendly and very helpful. They went out of their way to ensure that I got what I needed. They even changed a confirmed order when they found more desirable parts.
The shelves (920 bays with 7,000 shelves) came in very dirty. After power washing, they are fine. Very few are unusably damaged.
Summary: I will recomend and use this source again.

They don't seem to want your business

Filled out the online contact form requesting quote for gravity conveyors. They never got back to me, but didn't hesitate to put my email address on their junk mail list. Called them but was put on hold for several minutes before they hung up on me. Called back, no answer. My company will take it's business elsewhere.
