I cannot imagine a better way…

I cannot imagine a better way to experience the Amazon rainforest. The adventure begins the minute your guide - the exceptional Victor who’s lived in Madre de Dios his whole life in our case - picks you up from your hotel and you head deep into the jungle to board your boat upriver to the lodge. The lodge, cabins, bungalows, and tree house are all made with first rate local carpentry and make for a beautiful, natural, and relaxing base. The team - led by manager Jesus - are so welcoming and helpful and we sat down right away to an excellent lunch. The excursions and treks we did with Victor took us deep into the jungle and we were lucky enough to see a tamandua anteater, macaws on a clay lick, dwarf porcupine (!), emerald tree boa, and countless monkeys and wonderful birds. Our nights in the treehouse were truly incredible with the golden hour after sunrise some of the best wildlife watching we’ve ever been able to do. The team - including two of the Junglekeeper’s directors Stephane and Dina - shared many amazing stories with us over the excellent dinners we had throughout our stay.

Just go. It is a truly incredible stay and an even more amazing mission to save this very special corner of the world.

Once in a lifetime experience!

Once in a lifetime experience!
Everything about our visit to the Amazon was incredible and perfect. Transfers to and from the Sanctuary, our guides, the staff, food and accommodation all exceeded expectations. I highly recommend anyone who is considering the trip to book now. Thank you Jesus, Eler & Yiro!

The experience of nature in its purest form

This was one of the best experiences my wife and I have had. A small group of guests (5 total) getting taken around the beautiful Amazon rainforest to explore and experience. We learned a lot of things here (both flora and fauna, and the challenges the Junglekeepers rangers deal with), while we adapted to the wild.

If you can deal with high humidity (you are never really dry on this tour), open air rooms with no electricity (phones and camera gear gets charged in the main dining area), cold showers, then it totally worth it. Hikes during the day and night, crossing streams, floating down rivers and streams, great food, wonderful guides, and amazing stories from Paul and Willian.

The best jungle experience in Peru

One of the best jungle experiences you can have in Peru! The staff and guides are top notch, friendly and knowledgeable. Great food. The treehouse is breathtaking. And the work JungleKeepers is doing is world class and absolutely worth supporting. It's 100% worth it getting to see this amazing wild ecosystem with such great people.

Alta Sanctuary is One of One

Alta Sanctuary is an incredible opportunity to experience one of the most raw and remote areas of the world, with comforts like hot showers, chef-cooked meals, and comfortable mattresses.

The staff are incredibly knowledgeable, and are able to help you see and do exactly what kind of experience you want to have in the Las Piedras region.

Amazing

Amazing. I went looking for adventure and nature, but I got that and so much more! Yes, the treehouse is amazing with spectacular views but the people made my trip extra special. Elar was the best guide. He was so knowledgeable and so much fun. Each person or group has an assigned guide for the whole trip from beginning to end, including the trip from and back to puerto maldonado. There were 2 other groups there so I shared some activities with them, and some activities were individual. Your trip can be as mild or as exciting as you want. Elar would offer several options each day, depending on the weather, etc. The meals are family style and even though I'm not usually a social person, I LOVED that time. Talking and laughing with the other groups and guides and the manager. I also enjoyed chatting with Jesus and learning about the lodge. Elar, Jesus, Rolin (my crunching friend), and William are spectacular. I felt like a kid again going to summer camp and making the best friends and memories. You will leave with a full heart and plenty of mosquitos bites.

Great

We had an incredible time at Alta Sanctuary. We saw a huge variety of fauna and flora. Particular highlights were pretty close encounters with spider monkeys, howler monkeys, macaws, toucans, tanagers, king vultures, green ibis, herons and a huge number of other beautiful birds, insects (there are a lot of insects), spiders and mammals. We saw puma tracks but no puma this time! The lodges, including treehouse are comfortable and the food is very good. The views above the canopy are spectacular and once-in-a-lifetime. We were really treated and got to have dinner in the treehouse beneath the stars although this is incredibly labour intensive and we were the only guests on that night.

Victor our guide deserves special mention for being incredibly kind, knowledgable and really personalising our experience (we like birds!). All of the staff were very lovely to us. This was an incredible insight into this beautiful and precious ecosystem.

The trip was amazing

The trip was amazing! We weren’t sure what to expect since there were few reviews and Alta Sanctuary is relatively new to taking tourists, but it exceeded all expectations. We were picked up right at the airport by Victor, who was our guide for the entire stay. The sanctuary is located on a private nature reserve owned by Junglekeepers, which was started by the same people who founded Alta Sanctuary.

We happened to be there while the owners, some of whom are Peruvian, were holding a board meeting. It was immediately clear how deeply they all care about protecting and preserving the Amazon. There was no greenwashing here. They talk the talk and walk the walk.

Our trip itself was incredible. We stayed in the cabins, which are just far enough from the main base to feel private. Every morning, we saw animals right outside. One morning, it was howler monkeys swinging by. Other mornings, it was birds. Wildlife was everywhere. We saw six species of monkeys, countless birds, an anteater, and so much more.

We had been deciding between Alta Sanctuary and Tambopata Research Center. While I can’t directly compare the two, I’m so glad we chose Alta. Because it’s on a private reserve rather than in Tambopata National Park, and because it is fairly small, we saw very few other people during our stay. Aside from a handful of guests at mealtimes, we often felt like we had the entire rainforest to ourselves. This made wildlife sightings much more likely, and we had Victor, our guide, with us the entire time.

Victor planned each day around what we wanted to see and do. He was extremely knowledgeable and a fantastic guide. The rest of the staff and guides at the sanctuary were also wonderful.

Overall, if you want to experience the Amazon, enjoy great food, see incredible wildlife, and support a company that truly cares about its staff and about preserving the rainforest, I would strongly recommend Alta Sanctuary!

An absolutely incredible experience

An absolutely incredible experience. The most pristine wilderness that I have seen (and my mom and dad who are seasoned travelers too(40 years-100+ countries each). This combined with an incredibly warm staff( Shout out to Jesus and Rolli) made 8 days feel like 3. One of the few places like it, and a must see for anyone wanting to feel the pulse of mother nature.

The best part about Alta Sanctuary was the people!

The best part about Alta Sanctuary was being part of the "family" there. It wasn't like staying at a hotel, or even a boutique hotel, it was more like staying with friends in the jungle who happened to know quite a lot about all the snakes and birds and trees etc. We ate all meals at a big table with all the people there and enjoyed interesting conversations with them all and felt like we were a part of a research station, not just on a holiday.

So long as one is ready to be muddy and wet, is open to some early morning rises, and brings proper footwear (I had some Merrell aquatic hiking shoes that seemed to work well), then there isn't a more authentic way that I know of to explore the Amazon Rainforest!

A different kind of jungle...

This experience is very different from a simple visit to the jungle. If I had just gone alone, then for someone who has lived their entire life in the city, the jungle—or any other forest—would simply seem like a vast mass of greenery, insects, and many unfamiliar sounds. But when you are guided by people who are endlessly in love with this place, you inevitably start to see the jungle through their eyes.

It immerses you in a childlike state, as if you’re 12 years old again, caught in a continuous stream of exploration and wonder. Every time you encounter a new animal and the guide, with sparkling eyes, rejoices that they have found it for you, you feel a sense of delight. Even if you know nothing about that particular animal, you begin to resonate with these incredible people and simply trust the experience. Everything that happens to you turns into one seamless adventure—just like in childhood.

Regardless of whether the weather is favorable or not, whether you see many animals or just a few, it all becomes unimportant—the process itself turns into an adventure. And all of this is possible only because of the extraordinary team of people gathered in this place. It is nothing like an ordinary tourist experience.

Moreover, you don’t expect such care in a seemingly inhospitable place like the jungle. Yet, the team managed to provide a high level of comfort, and the food was absolutely amazing. I am deeply grateful to these people for their work, and I will definitely return—bringing all my friends with me.

Thank you for what you do!

I had the best time ever here

I had the best time ever here. It is very wild, and you’ll have to be prepared for that! I was pushed out of my comfort zone with our jungle expeditions and I learned so much. I am so fired up about the future and what they are doing here! The whole team is amazing and there is magic happening here

Immeasurable Beauty Filled with the Very Best People

Nothing can prepare you for the moment you step up onto that platform at the very top of the treehouse and look out onto a world so wild and pure that your breath shutters and feel your heart knot up.

There is something so inherently precious when you see a place that so many have convinced you is lost forever, yet it is right in front of your eyes. Alta Sanctuary is like finding one of the last true diamonds in the rough.

I spent 11 days filming with Alta Sanctuary and Junglekeepers to showcase this incredible place and what we stand to lose if we allow the destructive forces to take the very wildest places on our mother earth. During our production time with Alta's incredible jungle guides I was gifted a deep understanding of how absolutely crucial this place is to protect.

If you are looking for the most unique and impactful experience while also directly supporting the protection of the very best of our natural world, I could not recommend Alta Sanctuary more!

Help these incredible people protect the jungle before it's too late by having the experience of a lifetime!

Magical!

What could possibly be better than waking up to the sound of howler monkeys? Or opening your door to view macaws, parrots, and toucans in the trees? This was an amazing experience and I’d recommend to all seeking a true immersion into the Amazon jungle. The staff is friendly and welcoming, the food is fantastic and the excursions with both Paul and Victor were incredible. Paul was knowledgeable, so much fun, and fearless. He truly knows so much about the jungle. His stories, and JJ’s too, kept us all entertained every night. Paul encouraged all of us (group of 6) to step outside of our comfort zone and embrace the wonders of the Amazon. Every adventure was thrilling-jumping in the river, to sunset hikes, to nighttime river walks searching for caimans and anacondas-I can’t say enough positive things about this place. Thank you for everything!

Reflections on the Amazon

What about this trip was compelling enough that I will almost certainly be returning to the Amazon? ;-)

* Very supportive and accepting group of travel companions, I felt very safe as a solo female traveller.
* I have not felt more uplifted and proud of myself in years. I did not think I was capable of many physical activities which took place on this trip, and I was proven wrong each time.
* The BEST and MOST accommodating staff, making sure we were well fed, safe, and educated as we were led through the elements.
* Truly the best food I have ever had in my life, prepared by the staff!! Many incredible easter eggs in our meals. Some of the best desserts I've tasted (and surprisingly, the best pizza as well :-)).
* Living quasi outdoors, connected with the elements at all times, exposed to the sound of the howler monkeys each night.
* Daily itinerary filled with opportunities to connect to nature, get our heart pumping, and connect with the other members in our group.
* Every day was unique in terms of activities, food, conversations, the animals and plants that we encountered.
* Time slowed down and I learned to adopt the pace of the jungle. So many high-adrenaline activities took place each day that the completion of each day deeply felt like a reward in the most primitive sense.
* Opportunity to spend a night alone within the famed treehouse during a rainstorm. I was thoroughly humbled by the power of the rain and the jungle's response to the rain the following morning.

A Bucket List Adventure

What can I say about one of the best adventures of my life, and meeting two legends of the conservation world, Paul Rosolie and JJ Durand?

This journey was filled with excitement and unpredictability, leaving me both both intellectually and emotionally enriched. Alta Sanctuary feels like a slice of heaven on earth. The center is immaculate, offering modern comforts like flushing toilets and showers. No precarious squatting over a hole, thank goodness! George was an accommodating host, regularly checking in with the guest to ensure they felt comfortable.

The rooms were simple yet spacious and thoughtfully designed, with a comfortable bed and mosquito netting being the most essential feature. I slept soundly under the net, soothed by jungle sounds and the gentle flicker of fireflies. I stayed one night at the treehouse, which had its own small bathroom and a bedroom equipped with, of course, bug netting. Early I woke up to the patter of rain, and the call of howler-monkeys. Stepping out the the treehouse was a stunning view of the canopy with clouds forming along the Las Piedras River.

The excursions were nothing short of spectacular: day and night hikes, climbing an ancient tree, boat rides to observe wildlife, and engaging conversations with the crew about their close encounters with animals and humans alike. Be prepared to get wet and muddy. Paul and Victor, our guides, were phenomenal. Rain might shift plans, but Paul and Victor's enthusiasm didn’t falter; you’ll still be rallied to explore. This is a place to step outside your comfort zone, guided expertly every step of the way. Paul is a high-energy, charismatic individual brimming with humor and positivity as he convinces you to push your limits. Victor is more on the chill side with an encyclopedic knowledge of the area’s flora and fauna and uncanny talent for spotting the most tiny camouflaged animal from a mile away.

Meals were another highlight consisting of three delicious, well-balanced dishes served daily. Mealtimes were perfect for connecting with fellow guests, and by the end of the trip, the six of us got along famously.

This adventure is truly unforgettable. Alta Sanctuary is a must-visit for anyone craving a life-changing experience in the heart of the rainforest.
