Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 66 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Customers frequently complained about unhelpful support, rude employees, and major difficulties when trying to resolve returns, refunds, or product inquiries. Many people also struggled with heavily inflated prices, unexpected hidden fees, and severe delivery delays with their online or in-store purchases. Shoppers often felt completely ignored and deeply frustrated by the widespread lack of assistance available across locations. Some reviewers were happy with the exceptionally friendly staff and surprisingly smooth online shopping experiences. Others noted that certain specialty items arrived extremely well-packaged, fully intact, and worked great right out of the box.

Being charged for something I don't have, it's still in their store for almost 2 months

If you had 0 that would be my scale of customer satisfaction, I ordered a firearm, was notified on 05/02/25 I could not purchase firearm, I having to make payments monthly on an item that has never left their store.I talk with associate he told me it would not appear on my statement because they still have the firearm that was not true,I have opened a dispute but I have to continue making monthly payments until they realize item is still in their store ,they sent me an email on May 02 stating my order canceled but I'm confused because they are still requesting payment for $449.99 I call their customer service which was no help she stated until dispute is resolved I will be charged late fees if monthly payment isn't made by due date. How is it you don't know item still in your store, why would you even apply this to credit card knowing it was never picked up .They continue to send me emails and text stating item never picked up.Why I was denied I have no idea I've sent fingerprints to FBI requesting why I was denied they stated get in touch with King County which I have paid $12.50 on their request, still don't know but that really has nothing to do with Academy charging me for something I don't have.

$150 Sale Order Cancelled

I placed an order for over $150 worth of Carhartt merchandise during a recent sale and the whole order was cancelled as "they couldn't fulfill the order".

This was clearly a facade to receive thousands of customers email addresses and phone numbers so they can spam people with useless marketing material.

I should have read the TrustPilot reviews before placing as many people have had the same issue.

Gouging Customers - NOT COOL!

I bought my granddaughter some tennis shoes for volleyball and paid full price with a small discount it I used my academy credit card. My granddaughter couldn't fit them and needed a different size so they took my receipt to exchange them with the same shoe, same price and since I wasn't with them with my credit card they charged him the full amount. Gouging customers. NOT COOL! Makes me want to close my account!

Cancelled my order

I ordered a raincoat from Academy sports. The website said, order $15 dollars more and you will get free shipping, so I ordered a $19 shirt also to get the free shipping. They shipped the shirt but made no mention of the raincoat. Shirt is on its way, and I receive an email 5 days later saying they cancelled my raincoat order. I called, explained that I just ordered the shirt for the free shipping, it was just the raincoat that I really needed to no avail. I asked for a replacement raincoat instead maybe in another color, explaining that the coat was what I really needed but they wouldn't do it. Now I have to wait to get the shirt, return it and trust them to release my money I have already paid them when I could not trust them to send me the stuff I had already paid for.

Canceled my order then restocked at higher price - dishonest business

Ordered $471 worth of items that were in stock and got charged immediately. A few days later they sent an email saying they "can't fulfill" my order due to inventory issues. Complete lie - the same items are now back in stock at higher prices.
They clearly canceled because they decided the pricing was too good, not because of any real inventory problem. When you advertise a price, you should honor it. Period.
As a new customer, this was my first and last experience with Academy Sports. They offered a measly 20% off code (up to $40) as if that makes up for lying to customers and not honoring their advertised prices.
If you're looking for a retailer that actually stands behind their pricing, look elsewhere. Academy will cancel your order if they think you got too good of a deal, then make up excuses about why they can't fulfill it. Shady business practices.
Save yourself the hassle and shop somewhere that's actually honest with their customers.

Couldn't find my order from Paypal reference number

I placed an order and paid with Paypal. Four days later the order was still pending on Paypal. Trustpilot had no record of the order, nor could they assist me from the Paypal transaction number. I didn't lose any money, but neither do I have the jeans I wanted.

Academy is horrible

Academy is a horrible store. They mostly carry the lower end of product lines. If you purchase something online, good luck trying to return it. I have attempted to do this twice. Both times the system could not find my transaction using the receipt they had sent to my email. The first time the manager had to override the system, and issue a refund by manually entering the pricing information off the receipt. The second time was even worse. I wanted to exchange a pair of pants which were purchased on sale for $20.99 (reg. $34.99). The system could not find the transaction. Then the system issued a refund of $14.99. The price of a shirt, minus tax, which was also on the order. I was attempting to exchange the pants for the correct size. They don't do that. A refund is issued for the return, then the replacement is treated as a new transaction. They charged regular price for the replacement pants. What a scam. So, not only was I charged full price for a sale item, they also ripped me off $6 for the pants I returned. So, a pair of pants which should have cost $22.72 end up costing a little over $40. I do not trust this store/company, and will never conduct business with them again.

Academy deserves 0 stars

Academy deserves 0 stars. This company doesn't care about its customers. They lie about delivery dates and stock status daily. There corporate office is like talking to two year olds. All they can say is sorry I didnt do it. I cancelled all my orders and cut their high interest academy card in pieces. Never sign up for that no matter how many times they pressure you in store and online. Janessa M. provided no help at their corporate office. Hopefully, Amazon shuts them down sooner than later

SUMMARY-DON’T GET THE CHARGE CARD!!

SUMMARY-DON’T GET THE CHARGE CARD!!! They literally make you WORK to make payments, AND figure out where in the world this magic card is, or how to cancel it. Surely we all have better things to do?

BORING DETAILS:
A. Was given credit without asking for it, so charged a little bbgun for $86, with card supposedly to follow.
B. NEVER GOT THE CARD.
C. When the bill was received, rather than be late, and NOT KNOWING AN ACCOUNT NUMBER TO A CARD I NEVER RECEIVED I called to both pay it off and CLOSE THIS STUPID NEEDLESS ACCOUNT.
D. The typical foreign non-customer service rep was impossible to understand. Finally she tells me she can do what I need but it will cost me $9 for the privilege of talking to her impossible to understand.. self! Really?
E. Giving me the option of calling the automated line again I say YOU MEAN I CAN CLOSE AN ACCOUNT ON THE AUTOMATED LINE? “No, I can do that. You can call to make your payment.”

Ok. I’d had enough…
You get the picture, right?

Don’t use these people.
Life is too short. If they’d QC their own system even rarely they’d fix this myriad of ridiculous, time wasting BS.

I bought a new 9mm handgun from the…

I bought a new 9mm handgun from the Conroe, TX Store. I returned the weapon because it jammed up at the local firing range. The purchase included additional rounds of practice bullets. At no time was I told the practice bullets purchased could Jam the gun????? I was told I couldn't get another gun, and the store would have to send it out to get it checked out. I complied and 3 months later the gun was returned and couldn't get credit (very convenient for the store profit margin), for buying the practice rounds. They couldn't take the gun I bought cause the law wouldn't allow. Other stores buy guns from private citizens!!! This is unacceptable and I closed my account with them and don't recommend anyone to buy from such a lack of responsibility and dishonesty from Academy Sports!

After years of dealing with Academy Sports I just received my bill and they now want to charge me $2.99 A month for paper billing lol ridiculous for a company that Charges full retail for everything in the store and I pay my bill in full every Month, I will no longer be doing business with them. I have bought over $4000 worth of guns from them paying for them all in full and they want to charge me to do business with them. I will never again step foot in an academy sports.

My rights were denied buying a Marlin 1894.

I tried to a Marlin 1894 lever action rifle in the McDonough, GA store that was in the rack. They said because I was from Maryland I wasn't allowed to make the purchase. This is not a Georgia law. This is Academy Sports denying the rights of an American citizen. I will never set foot in Academy again and all my friends and relatives will here about this liberal shameless display.

There was no curbside pickup available…

There was no curbside pickup available at the Hickory, NC store. The curbside pickup signs were staged behind columns at the entrance. The customer service line was my only option. Of course there was only one associate working the customer service area plus she was running the register. The line was long and so I waited. When I was next in line and another customer was waiting behind me another associate finally asked the customer behind me if he needed help? Instead of asking me first, which should have been the obvious solution, the associate paid me NO attention as I continued to wait. Finally, after the customer at the register was taken care of, the associate asked do you need help? I wanted to say No, I am just standing here for no reason. Which I didn’t. I gave her my order number. As I waited for my merchandise, the same associate complained to the other associate about being rude to customers and not caring. She said I don’t care who hears me either! I understand it’s the Christmas season and some people can be rude but others spend their hard earned money and expect respect back from store employees!

WARNING..LONG LINES...SLOW.. INEXPERIENCED... MANAGER ARROGANT & UNWILLING TO SERVE OR HELP

WARNING: Wednesday 12-11..at 2:02pm..I went to the Academy on NW loop 410/Military... picked out three shoes over $200 +, and went to the front to check out there were 40-50 people in line with three checkers... I waited for 10 min, and line Checkers did NOT attempt to move swiftly or exhibit true customer service skills. A conversation struck up in line. "Someone needs to call a manager to open lanes." I volunteered to walk to the front of the store to ask for a manager. The first person employee I asked behind the counter, said I'm busy. I walked to the doorman & asked to call a manager. It is very possible he/she was unaware. 7-8 min later, the manager arrived and did not greet me; he was greeting the angry person in line. With that said, I approached him and asked him if he could pull some of his many employees to the front to assist with customer service. HE not only makes every excuse.., but he said this is its new policy. I asked, well, can you open a register? THIS IS CUSTOMER SERVICE ACADEMY!! Note, not willing, Well Academy has lost a valuable customer... We will not wait in line for 40 minutes because their bottom dollar is more important than our time & exhibiting customer service respect. I asked again, can you open a register? He was arrogant and had zero managerial skills. This was so unusual and ridiculous that I had to post it. I wished I would have thought to take a picture. I had never seen such a thing, and it seemed there were hardly any people in the store. Too big to fail to lose.... I don't think so...

Clyde of firearms department is horrible

Went to purchase a Savage 30.06. An employee there named Clyde was extremely rude and patronizing. I literally had to read the description word for word before he quit acting like a know it all. In reality, after this, I realize they only have one Savage 30.06 of any kind or description. How rude, will jot make another purchase here again.
