PureGym Fore Street
PureGym Fore Street, Exeter – really disappointing. I’ve been a member since 2021 and the gym has become increasingly poorly maintained. The cleaning and general upkeep are not being done properly, and there’s an extremely strong odour most of the time which suggests poor ventilation.
A lot of the equipment is rusty and machines are often out of order. It also feels like the focus is more on signing up new members than maintaining the space and fixing issues. The changing rooms are consistently unclean, with very dirty floors, and I’ve had multiple occasions where there was no toilet paper or soap available. I’ve stopped using the showers altogether because of how unhygienic it feels.
Overall, it’s been a terrible experience lately and I’m planning to move to a different gym.

Great trainers but some drawbacks
Bradley and Lizzie are great trainers. However there are 3 niggles about this gym.
Most importantly there is a chronic lack of secure bike parking. PureGym has a carbon reduction climate change policy. It's just green-washing, however, if gym users get their bikes stolen. This happens often, other members who are cyclists have told me. The head office hasn't provided investment for cctv for the pitiful 5 bike spaces.
Huge numbers of members are students. It's impossible to park securely in mid winter. There's a lift which it would be so easy to give cyclists access to. On the landing next to gym entrance there is space for at least 20 bike racks, especially the type where you hang the front wheel up like you find on some trains.
People who like to keep fit often invest in expensive bikes. PureGym should support those of us who keep fit outside the gym and don't drive or get the bus to the gym. We choose to leave our cars at home because we care about climate change. It seems that PureGym doesn't care.
Given the environment and climate change, I'm generally uncomfortable with overheated gyms. It's good to exercise without sweating buckets. But this gym is so poorly insulated that, even after two consecutive classes on a Wednesday morning, my fingers are usually white with cold. One trainer had to go downstairs to run her hands under the warm tap between the classes. I often wear 5 or 6 layers to classes in the studio but my hands are still white at the end.
PureGym has been in this building many years. Thousands of members, great profit. If the gym doesn't own the freehold it should lobby the building owner to invest in insulation. If it's this bad in the winter it must be really expensive to air-condition the building in summer.
Finally the music played is awful, even the volume is set by head office. It's intrusive and stifles conversation. It's uncomfortably loud at times of day when head office cranks up the volume. Nobody listens to it.
It would be far preferable to have new music or much quieter classical music with out intrusive beat, such as Mozart and Bach. There's loads of research that shows people are more productive, think more clearly and are happier when non vocal music by Bach is played as background music.
On a positive note the manager is a very customer focused guy.

Some of the machines need servicing
Some of the machines need servicing - the spin bikes have straps that have broken and they are not all adjustable - they all need servicing.
Also the back extension machine adjuster has completely broken so it cannot be adjusted which is such a shame.

Exeter gym is pretty cramped but for the price it's okay.
Pros:
It's pretty cheap, there's a standard range of equipment, a lot of treadmills if you are into torturing yourself and the changing rooms are pretty standard.
Also the classes are really good, the "Learn to Lift" workshops are so underused - I had one with Estin and he was really helpful and patient and not judgmental at all.
The cons:
The Exeter fore street Gym is pretty cramped, everything is close together and it generally feels quite small. The atmosphere feels pretty toxic compared to other gyms but that's just the vibes. It gets really really busy in peak times.

Short term membership, easy to set.up and use.
I decided to take a short 7 day membership as I was staying in the area. I visited the gym at Fore Street, Exeter and was shown around by Eliot. At home, I was easily able to navigate your straight forward site to set up the membership, received confirmation almost immediately and instructions on how to access the gym. Generally, very happy with the gym itself, although busy at times.

Brilliant Gym
Gym is open 24/7 which is super useful, I’ve never had any issues with getting on any machines, even though the electrolyte water is extra on the monthly fee it’s a great bonus to have in the gym.

Pure Gym Update
Further to my previous post about pure gym Exeter, I’ve had a reply stating that at night they cut locks and empty lockers, when ?? I was in there today and there was no change, there was also a guy in the locker room taking pictures of himself with no regard to who might be in the background, I did speak to him (which was a waste of time) as he had the same self entitled attitude that seems to thrive there, so if a half naked picture of me turns up on the internet, I look forward to suing pure gym for not being pro active in protecting the privacy of its members. So much for the ‘safe’ environment I’m always hearing about over the speaker system ? I did speak to the manager who told me “we have notices up all over the gym stating the rules” Really ? That’s just very poor and VERY lazy management. I’ve not one time seen a message sent through the App telling people to adhere to the rules or practices at the gym, all I get through that is offers of a personal trainer (yeah right!) Otto buy things from the vending machine , clearly being “pro active” in the running of the gym SHOULD be your TOP priority, but it seems your all to interested in sitting in the office or going out with your advertising material touting for new members, how about looking after the ones you already have ?
