Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 305 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers were frustrated by unexpectedly high prices and numerous hidden fees that significantly increased the initial cost. Reviewers often reported issues with service, including unhelpful staff and a lack of transparency regarding required insurance or large security deposits. The off-site location and remote video interaction for pickup also led to delays and inconvenience. Conversely, some customers experienced positive interactions, praising staff for being helpful, transparent, and providing good service. A few other people also felt that the shuttle service was efficient and appreciated the lower prices compared to competitors.

DO NOT DO IT!!

DO NOT DO IT!!

On June 7, 2026, my travel companion and I prepaid a rental car through Expedia with NU Car Rentals Phoenix for a total all-inclusive price of $358.56.

When we picked up the vehicle on June 18, 2026, we clearly told the counter associate that we already had comprehensive insurance through Progressive, that our coverage extended to Arizona, and that we did not want or need any additional insurance or optional protection products.

The associate acknowledged what we said and then directed us to initial several boxes on an electronic signature screen. At no point did the associate explain that those initials were authorizing the purchase of optional insurance or other add-on products. We reasonably believed we were simply completing the standard paperwork required to pick up the vehicle.

After the rental agreement was printed, we immediately noticed that the total amount was higher than our prepaid Expedia reservation. We questioned the associate before completing the transaction and were specifically told that the difference was only a refundable security deposit that would be returned when the vehicle was brought back in good condition.

Relying on that representation, we completed the transaction.

After returning home, we discovered that the additional charges were not a refundable deposit at all. Instead, NU Car Rentals had charged us for optional products that we had expressly declined and never knowingly agreed to purchase.

As a result, a rental that we had prepaid for $358.56 ultimately cost us $955.84—an increase of nearly $600 over the price we had agreed to pay.

We immediately contacted NU Car Rentals in an effort to resolve the issue. We explained that we had declined all optional coverage, that we had never been informed we were authorizing additional products by initialing the electronic screen, and that we had been told the additional amount was merely a refundable deposit.

A manager acknowledged our complaint and stated that it would be escalated for review. Shortly afterward, we were informed that the charges would remain. We were also told that a written explanation would be emailed to us. Despite multiple follow-up calls requesting that email, it was never sent.

As a result, we had no choice but to dispute the charges with our credit card company.

What is most disappointing is not simply that we were charged for products we never intended to purchase—it is that we were led to believe the additional amount was only a refundable deposit after we had already made it clear that we did not want any optional coverage. Had the transaction been explained honestly and transparently, we would have refused the additional products immediately.

Before posting this review, I also looked through the company's Google reviews and found numerous customers describing experiences that closely resemble ours, including allegations that optional products were added without their knowledge or that additional charges were not adequately explained during the rental process. Reading those reviews made me realize that our experience may not have been an isolated incident.

I encourage anyone renting from NU Car Rentals Phoenix to carefully review every document before signing, ask for a printed copy of the agreement before completing the transaction, and verify every charge before handing over a credit card.

Scammed

While renting the vehicle, I got 3 scratches on the car... I was very stressed when I was delivering the car back because I had really bad time, and had to catch the flight, the person who tok the car said that I will be charged for the 3 scratches., which I had no problem with that. So I signed the form.. I asked the man how much will be the cost of the reparation. He answered that I will get that by mail the next day... The next day I got an email with a huge amount and that I made totally 7 scratches and a Crack. Something not could be possible.. Obviously the person added these after me signing the form.. When talking to the company the next day. I was interrupted by the agent all the time, he had no interest in hearing me, and then he hang on me... I called again, and he told me to listen or he will hang up on me, and he again hanged up... I travel a lot, and I rent cars all the time in many countries... Scamers like that never seen. Since I have friends in Bulgaria I decided with there advice to complane about this company to government organizations. I even sended an email to get avedence for their accusations because I have a video of the car before renting, but they never answered. Avoid renting cars from this company... They have used the moment when they saw me stressed to catch the flight.

NU=Never Use

NU=Never Use! If 0 was possible, that would be my rating. The guy at the desk was very nice but I saw him do the same thing to the guy in front of me. A guy in line behind me turning his vehicle in said the same was done to him. Original rental$ was $107. Would not let me rent for less than around $550. I'd seen reviews, done homework, went prepared and it didn't matter.

Will Not Rent from NU Again

I was immediately put off by the fact that when you get to the office to rent the car, you deal with someone sitting in another country and is on a video call with you! Then they ask for a copy of your auto insurance. Of course, I did not know I had to show proof of insurance. Most rental car companies just need to know the name of your insurance company. It took about an hour for me to get a copy and submit it to NU. So it took too long just to get the car keys. It was ridiculous. Awful service and it should be disclosed BEFORE you rent the car that you will need to show proof of insurance. Will never rent from them again. (I rented from the Nashville location of NU.)

Scammers!!!!

I made a 7-day reservation through Priceline for a total of $49.88. When I arrived at the rental counter, the representative, Melanie, told me that I would not be allowed to rent the vehicle unless I purchased their supplemental insurance, even though I provided proof of my Allstate policy with full coverage. The charges totaled more than $300. Scam by all means

We rented a minivan in good faith for a road trip from FL to MA over the summer break. We understood that it meant a non-refundable rate if we canceled our trip, but only found after confirming the reservation that the car could not leave the state, and we were informed that we would be charged $350 per state border crossed, and the unlimited mileage was changed to $.50 a mile. We were facing several thousand in fees. They refused to cancel the reservation.

Lovely Laotian lady~♡

This was my second time using this rental car service, and I truly appreciated the thoughtful care and friendly service from Pha, a Laotian staff member. She was very kind and took the time to explain the insurance options clearly and in detail, which made me feel comfortable and confident.
The car and overall environment were clean and pleasant, and I had no inconvenience at all during my rental. I’m very satisfied with the service and would definitely use them again next time. Highly recommended!

Should have read reviews but didn't realize Priceline uses car rental services away from Sky Harbor rental car center.

This was not convenient, especially at 9 o'clock at night!! And I have to use them at 5am going back to Sky Harbor.

I will say all the employees were very nice.

Also, why would you book a large 7 person van that uses premium gas to someone traveling alone!! Thank God I had limited mileage during my 3 day trip. There were other vehicles on the lot!! Then a $1000.00 security deposit!! I have never had this happen before. I will be watching my credit card carefully for any excess charges too!! Sounds like this company is known for this.

Since I have been a snowbird for years I rarely use a rental car service. I did not feel comfortable with this Company.

In the future I will only use services at the Sky Harbor rental car center!!!!

BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY!!!!

If I could give this company a negative I would!! I took videos of picking up and dropping off the car. I get home and I have MULTIPLE charges on my credit card. They claim I did not follow cancellation policy to my credit card companies inquiry…..I never cancelled!! I rented the car. Now it’s July and we are still fighting the hundreds of dollars of charges!!!

I wish I had read other reviews first

I wish I had read other reviews before booking with NU out of Tampa Airport. We prepaid for collision coverage at the time of booking, through Priceline, and got a great rate, but when we got to the counter they insisted we add Liability insurance and would not allow us to continue with the booking unless we did. By the time all was said and done, it was no longer a good deal so we walked away.
If you rent here, be aware that you cannot decline the insurance and the deal you think you got, is not!

I recently reserved a Mercedes Banz and got to the rental place in salt lake city Utah only to find out they did not have a Mercedes Benz but instead had a BMW available but the cost was additional amount per day. I find this very disturbing specialty because I had the Benz Reserved. Then I was told My insurance would not cover my use of the car and had to buy there insurance another additional cost of $46 dollars per day. Overall my quote for the initial reservation doubled in cost. So, I returned the car and forgot my Handi cap plague hanging on the mirror and called back about it. Which their response was nothing was found so I sent photo of the Plaque hanging on the mirror and it's been Crickets since then. I tried to Email them at their e-mail listed on the Contract brochure to find out the email is un deliverable. I would not recommend this car Retal to anyone

I rarely leave negative reviews, NU Car Rental deserves one

I rarely leave negative reviews, but I feel compelled to share my experience so others can make an informed decision before renting from NuCar/HPower Car Rental.

I reserved a vehicle for five days with what was advertised as unlimited mileage. Unfortunately, the rental process was frustrating from the moment I arrived. Rather than speaking with a representative, I had to wait for access to a room to complete a virtual rental process. The customer service throughout the experience was impersonal and unwelcoming.

More concerning were the unexpected restrictions and fees that were not clear when I made my reservation:

• Although I reserved unlimited mileage, I was informed there was a 100-mile-per-day limitation because I live in the Nashville area, with additional mileage charges beyond that.
• I was told I was not permitted to drive the vehicle out of state.
• I paid in advance to extend my rental by one day, yet I was charged for two additional days because of the company’s “calendar day” policy.
• In addition to a $500 security hold, another $200 hold was placed on my card solely because I am a local resident.

By the time everything was added, the total cost was nearly double the original quote.

I understand that every rental company has policies, but they should be disclosed clearly before a customer commits to a reservation. Transparency and customer service go hand in hand, and unfortunately, I experienced very little of either.

I share this review in the hope that others won’t encounter the same unexpected fees, restrictions, and disappointing customer service that I did. I encourage anyone considering renting from NuCar/HPower to carefully review every policy and ask detailed questions before arriving.

Liar, Liar, pants on fire!

The "agent" began lying as soon as he opened his mouth. I counted at least 4 scams he tried to perpetrate on me. It was pathetic. I cannot believe Priceline uses them in their bundles. NEVER, NEVER AGIAN will I be duped into doing business with this horrible "business"!!!

Stay Away!!!

The WORST car rental experience. I booked through Expedia. They were supposed to pick me up with a shuttle, instead I received an automated text message that the office was closed. I checked online for the office hours and the office was indicated to be open. When I called to speak with a person, I was automatically directed to a voice message that told me to send a text. When I texted I received no response. I spent money on a cab to get to the rental and the office was in fact open.

They charged my card 4 times with separate charges including an unknown $300 charge that I am disputing. I rented the car for 24-hours and they are trying to charge me $460. It was supposed to be $120. This company is a sham and online companies like Expedia should stop working with them.

STAY FAR, FAR AWAY FROM THIS SHADY COMPANY

I wish I could give NEGATIVE STARS

After arriving at their offsite location, I had to use a two way video to process the rental with an off shore agent. The quality of the audio and video was so low that I had an extremely had time what was being said. I requested that the agent repeat himself multiple times and he began to get angry and was very curt. I was required to provide my personal vehicle insurance information and was informed that neither it nor the coverage offered by my Chase credit card was sufficient. I was pressured into paying a previously undisclosed additional $150 for their insurance. I was then told that the deposit amount was $1000 dollars! As we had been shuttled away from the airport and held captive, this seemed like a very predatory practice. After the shock wore off, I instructed the agent to hold off on processing anything while I did some additional research. After viewing their overwhelmingly negative reviews, repeated records of unauthorized charges and predatory practices, I cancelled the reservation. I am beyond disappointed by Priceline for including this company, which is not accredited by the BBB, in their lineup.

Wrong vehicle size and extra charges

We were given a Dodge Durango in Miami on June 13, instead of “full size” SUV we booked and paid for. It claimed it would be a Ford Expedition or Jeep Wagoneer or similar. They had no other choice for vehicle and we needed a car. Definitely not what we paid for. No consideration on that issue and then they sold us toll pass we didn’t need- $15/day. We didn’t know if we needed it, but I trusted him because of convenience he made it seem.

I was looking at rental cars in Expedia. I was on a car through Budget, but saw a larger option listed below so looked at that. Clicking the link actually changed car companies, and I did not realize it. When I got my confirmation email, I immediately tried to cancel (within 2 minutes) and was unable to do so. This company is clearly out to make money with no customer service, and I will avoid them in the future as well as no longer booking anything through Expedia who were of no help.

Will rip you off

This company will rip you off. I rented my car with my flight ticket through CheapOAir and prepaid to lock in price of $568.00. When I went to pick the car up they attempted to add insurance at $150.00 a day. I told them NO! I returned the car four days early and asked for a receipt to prove I returned it early. She said it would come through my email. I received the receipt and the total price charged was $703.78. When I wrote and asked about the a refund for the days not used, car rental, $45.84 a day, toll usage of $11.99 a day and exorbitant surcharges.i was expecting a refund of around $230.00. I got a message back saying they do not refund for days not used. This company gives false advertisement, lures other sites in to use them, and lies about their cost to sucker you in. Please use a reputable car rental. Never book with NU or any company attached with them.

Scammers. Bait and switch scammers

I was forced to get an upgrade at holiday prices over Memorial Day weekend on Sat May 23. I was forced to get an upgrade due to an unacceptable supplier choice. They offered me an 8 passenger Mercedes Benz van stating that it was the only one available on
"suppliers Choice" inventory. I said that I am 77 years old and a single driver and I cannot drive an 8 passenger van on the highway
from Phoenix to Sedona, over 100 miles of highway driving. I drive a compact SUV and I would have accepted that or a sedan or even a pickup truck. This was completely unacceptable and it was unsafe to drive such a large vehicle. The rental agency was trying to scam me by using holiday weekend sales tactics and using a forced upgrade.

My research indicated that when the agency says "suppliers choice" they are contractually required to provide a vehicle that I can
reasonably drive. If the "only car" they have available in that category is a massive 8 passenger commercial van, they must switch me to a compact SUV or standard sedan and they are supposed to give me that free of charge because they ran out of appropriate
inventory. Instead, they took advantage of the busy holiday weekend traffic to pressure me into paying double.

In summary, this is what I have attached for documentation.

Thank you,

Mary Farrell
