If I could give fewer stars I would. We have had the loxone system for our lights for a couple of years and it’s horrible. The mini server always needs resetting and the lights decide independently when or if they will turn on. We’ve gone days without being able to turn lights on or off, it’s an absurd problem to have. I would never get non-conventional light switches again and I would definitely not use loxone for any ‘smart’ system

I’ve been running an smart home on Loxone which supports my lighting, heating, and car charger functions for two years.
First, the good news …. my Loxone installation has been very stable, and I have not experienced any outages. This is a good thing, as their business model is providing support through a network of ‘partners’ who are trained on the complex Loxone system. Any faults would be expensive to fix as the system is complex. Loxone is not an end-user friendly system and requires expertise even for the simplest of changes such as adding a wireless device.
The Loxone end-user interface is slick and well-designed, with interfaces provided for mobile, tablet, and desktop and can be controlled remotely. There is also a new Apple CarPlay app that you can use in your car …. handy for opening the garage door as you approach.
Loxone offers a vast array of products covering many categories of automation. However, you need a very large budget as costs quickly add up. For example, simple smart wall plugs are £90 each, RGBW 5m LED Strips are £135, and the drivers to power the LED’s are £110 each. Smart wall switches are £235. The products are of high quality, and you need to judge the value for money on the overall system.
There are limited options for European-centric third-party hardware such as Bosch appliances, Hormann garage doors, air conditioner vendors, etc. each requiring their own add-in hardware controller (at a cost of course!)
Forget about integration with any other technology or smart system. Loxone doesn’t work with ubiquitous technology such as Alexa, Google Home, Samsung Smarthings, etc. So one of today’s must-have smart home feature -voice control - is not on offer by Loxone.
There is the faint possibility of integration using the Matter standard, however my experience is that Loxone’s experimental add-in falls over pretty quick, and support is non-existent. Loxone ignores any support requests as it says it is in Alpha-testing mode – which it has been for over three years! The excuse tiven is that it is a new technology and takes a lot of system resources. Other smart home technology vendors don’t seem to have that issue, and three years is an eternity in smart home technology terms. I can only conclude that Loxone is leveraging their closed system to tie you to their eco-system. This is unfortunate as Matter would extend and add interoperability to your smart home with functionality not offered by Loxone (ie. TV controls, irrigation systems, Sonos speakers, Ring security, etc.) As a result I am having to run two separate smart home systems with no interraction between the two due to Loxone's closed system.
In summary, if you are looking for a robust, stable, smart home system, consider Loxone. Keep in mind that it requires partner support and comes at a cost. If I were to do it all over again, I would definitely seriously consider other smart home solutions, concentrating on features, compatibility, hardware, support, and of course, £££!
PROS:
- Very stable and reliable
- Modern, fresh interface for desktop, tablet and mobile
- Well designed, stylish top-quality hardware
- Online shop with speedy delivery of components
- Wide range of functions (for the trained/experienced installer)
CONS
- Expensive products and services
- Requires a smart home ‘partner’ for most changes/tasks with associated costs
- Closed eco-system with no ability to work with other common smart home products/technology (ie. Matter, Alexa, Samsung Smart Things, Google Home, etc.)
- No voice control
- Limited number of approved integrated third party hardware vendors
Training at Loxone is well presented and taught, with lots opportunity to ask questions. The hands on config approach works well, providing challenges to reinforce and foster deeper learning.
