Oktoberfest Munich experience

We did participate in the experience as presented and followed the instructions provided to us. Unfortunately, what we encountered fell significantly short of what we reasonably expected based on the information provided before the event.

I want to begin by noting that the customer service prior to our arrival was very good. We received clear information regarding the reservation process, where to check in, and what we needed to do in order to participate.

When we arrived for check-in, we were on time and received our map, welcome shot, beer tokens, and other materials. However, the check-in area itself was extremely crowded, with very little room to stand comfortably, sit, or even place a drink down. Rather than feeling like an organized welcome experience, it felt congested and somewhat chaotic.

We also found the complimentary beer disappointing. The beer we received was warm and was, unfortunately, the least enjoyable beer we had during our time in Germany. While this alone would not have caused us to have a negative impression, it contributed to the overall experience.

Prior to attending Oktoberfest, we had been given the impression that although it is certainly a lively celebration, the environment would generally remain well managed and that excessively intoxicated or disruptive behavior would be addressed. Our experience was quite different. A number of people participating in the tour appeared to already be heavily intoxicated before we even entered the tent, which made the environment considerably less comfortable for us as international visitors experiencing Oktoberfest for the first time.

The most significant problem occurred when the group was taken to the Paulaner tent. We were instructed to follow a guide wearing a pink jacket through an extremely dense crowd. Unfortunately, the guide moved ahead with only a small portion of the group, and we quickly lost sight of her. We ultimately had to locate the correct section ourselves.

Once we arrived at the designated area, we provided our table information and were directed toward what was supposed to be our reserved table. The table was already completely occupied by a group of men in lederhosen who appeared to have been there for quite some time. The table number had also been removed, and there was only approximately half of one bench available. There clearly was not enough space for the two of us to sit comfortably.

We asked whether this was Table 23 and were simply told to sit, despite there being no realistic place for two people to do so. At that point, the situation became extremely uncomfortable and we decided to leave.

Before leaving, I explained the problem to a young staff member at the end of the section. She appeared surprised by what had happened, but unfortunately no alternative seating, replacement arrangement, or other solution was offered.

This is the part of the experience that concerns me most. Throughout the booking process, we were led to believe there was an organized system intended to provide guests with a reserved and enjoyable Oktoberfest experience. However, once we reached the most important part of the experience—the reserved seating in the tent—that process appeared to break down completely.

We had paid specifically for the security and convenience of having this arrangement made in advance. Finding ourselves without adequate reserved seating and with no meaningful alternative offered left us feeling that we had paid a substantial amount of money without receiving the primary benefit we purchased.

As visitors from outside Germany, we specifically chose an organized experience because we believed it would make Oktoberfest easier to navigate and more welcoming for first-time international guests. Unfortunately, our experience had the opposite effect.

I intend to share an honest review of our experience so that other travelers can make an informed decision before spending a significant amount of money on a similar booking. Before doing so, however, I wanted to provide you with the opportunity to understand what happened and to determine whether you believe any resolution is appropriate.

I hope this feedback is taken seriously, particularly regarding group management, reserved seating verification, and the ability of staff to provide an alternative when the reserved arrangement is unavailable.

Thank you for taking the time to review our concerns.
