DO NOT SELL WITH THREDUP, ESP IF YOU HAVE NEW, NEVER WORN ITEMS WITH TAGS!

While buying here is straightforward and there are plenty of options at different and fair price points, my view changed completely after my first (and last!) experience trying to sell with them. I decided to use their complimentary clean out bag provided to me after my first order with them, and I figured ok seems like a simple process and even included some items in fantastic condition; I'm talking items WITH TAGS, NEW, NEVER WORN. I was not informed on the "premium" bag option and upon learning about this when speaking with customer sevice, it's advertised as something for having "upscale"/designer items, and there was barely any information about selecting this option if you want the option to get your ineligible items back. I am beyond disappointed that ThredUp just decided to take my items with absolutely zero consideration of the new tags and new condition, and now it is just money down the drain. Had I known about this, I would've kept these and try to sell it on my own to still try to earn something instead of having ThredUp waste it for no reason. The customer service agent who I spoke to on this matter had absolutely zero empathy, no proactivity and just copied and pasted the same response and zero effort to help me. This changed my view on ThredUp completely and not only will I not sell with them again, but I'm not gonna buy anything from them either from now on. It's clear they're trying to be like Vestiaire Collective or RealReal prioritizing high end brands to sell, when the one thing that set them apart was having affordable fast fashion brands too for resell which is what we need to promote circular fashion, as not everyone has the money to own or have designer items to sell to them. Absolutely horrendous experience with misleading marketing on the process of the clean out bags.

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback and experience. We truly understand how much trust it takes to send in your clothing, and we have several measures in place to ensure items are processed according to our standards. While we can’t guarantee the acceptance of every item—since there are multiple factors that determine what we can accept—we do our best to provide all the information needed to help you decide if ThredUp is the right fit for you. Our team follows strict guidelines, but we always want to make the process as smooth as possible.

For future Clean Out bags, we recommend requesting a Consignment Premium Clean Out and choosing to have any unaccepted items returned to you. We’ve also reached out for more information so we can work towards providing you with a better experience. Thank you again for your feedback!

I had to give a star to write this

I had to give a star to write this. If give no stars if I could. I sent in 3 closeout kits and over half of my items they said had no warnings and when I asked for them back this is all they kept telling me.

I sincerely apologize for any confusion regarding the items with no earnings. Items that do not meet our resale criteria are assessed thoroughly, and unfortunately, if they do not qualify for resale, they are not eligible for return. This policy applies to all items, including premium bags, which may have different pricing or service features, but the fundamental policy remains the same: they are processed, assessed, and if they don't qualify for resale, they are not returned to the customer.

Instead, these items are typically donated, recycled, or disposed of responsibly, as we strive to minimize waste and promote sustainability. I understand that this may be frustrating, especially when you have sent items with the expectation that they would be sold. Please know that our intention is to handle all items ethically and responsibly.

If you have any further questions or concerns, or if there's anything else I can assist you with, please feel free to let me know! I'm here to help!

Everything they said had no earnings were high end items and refused to return them. The other items is sent they would sell for a good amount but only credit me chump change! This was the biggest mistake I've ever made trying to sell with them when I should've put them on facebook marketplace instead. I feel like they legally robbed me of my hard earned money!

Thank you for your review, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience you’ve experienced with our ineligible payout items. We encourage everyone to review our selling guide and payout estimator before sending in a bag to make sure we’re the right fit. Some low-priced items are ineligible for a payout because their processing costs are higher than their resale value. We will still accept and re-sell these items to extend their lives and keep them from polluting our planet; however, these items will not be eligible for a payout. If you’d like us to take another look, we’ve requested more information from you so we can assist you more specifically. Thank you so much!

Simply put a joke = NET LOSS

They suck. I’m a clothes wh@re admittedly and my friend suggested Thred Up it seemed like a great idea…until it wasn’t.

You pay $30 for a superior level prepaid bag but the reality is you get pennies to the dollar for items you sell unless you have exceptionally high end (Gucci, Prada, LV, etc) and you may yield slightly higher earnings but with many items still with tags (J.Crew, Banana Republic, Tory Burch, etc) earnings were dismal. I paid more for the bag than what I yielded in earnings so it was a net LOSS for me 😢.

Don’t waste your time or money. You’ll get more as a tax write off donating clothing items.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. We’re truly sorry if your expectations weren’t fully met. Our goal is always to make it simple and convenient for customers to pass along items from their closets that they’re no longer wearing. We encourage everyone to review our selling guide and payout estimator before sending in a bag to make sure we’re the right fit.

Our payouts may be a bit lower because of the work involved on our end—such as processing, photographing, listing, and storing each item. Other resale apps can be a great option if you have the time and space to hold onto your items and ship them individually, while ThredUp is a great alternative if you’d like to send in everything at once and have it handled for you. We truly appreciate your feedback and are always here if you have any questions!

Much disappointment

As a seller, I feel I got a pretty fair deal for what I had sent to them. However, although my first bag was accepted with me earning a cut of the sales price, I was quickly flagged as "Donation" for any future bags, since mine did not include any high-end labels. That aggravated me, but I just decided not to send any more there. Now, as a buyer, overall, I was happy and got some really cute stuff for not a lot of money. However, starting late in 2025, I noticed after putting things in my cart and paying for them, I was getting refunds and being told a particular item was no longer available. This had never happened from early 2024 through late 2025, so I was confused. It happened 3 times between mid-December 2025 and mid-January 2026, the final time being a dress I really wanted. That did it for me. I attempted to contact customer service, but got AI. I have deleted my account with them because it seems like something in their buying process changed over that time period, and honestly, I don't want to deal with the disappointment of thinking I scored something cool only to be told someone else got it first.

Thank you so much for your feedback, and we’re truly sorry to hear about your experience. To clarify the donation-only status, it’s a temporary pause on accounts that we implement when we need to lower our inventory. This process is randomized to ensure fairness and isn’t based on items sent in from previous bags. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Additionally, we understand how disappointing it is when items aren’t available at the time your order is processed, and we’ll definitely pass your feedback along to help us improve. We’re also sorry to hear about your experience with our support team. We have requested a bit more information to see if we can make this a better experience. Thank you so much!

Theft

I sent a box of some nice designer items per their list of what’s accepted. They unceremoniously DONATED most of it without giving me a chance to pay to have them sent back!!! They steal from you. They kept 2 items, netting me a whopping $7 when they did sell.

And a buying experience was equally as disappointing. The dress had a huge stain on it. No recourse.
Never ever again.

Hi there, we’re really sorry to hear about your experience and understand how frustrating that must feel.

When sending in items, we always suggest selecting the option to have any unaccepted items returned when using our Premium labels. This ensures that anything we’re unable to accept can be sent back to you rather than being responsibly recycled or donated. We try to be as transparent as possible with our payouts by having our Payout Estimator and Selling Guides. At the end of the day, we make it the most convenient for you to Clean Out without any hassle on your end. If you have questions about your payout feel free to reach out.

We’re also very sorry to hear that the item you purchased arrived not as described. That’s definitely not the experience we want for our customers. Please send us an email at Support@thredup.com with the details of your order, and our team will be happy to look into this and help make it right.

We appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

Greed only causes negative returns

You charge customers a minimum $14.99 to send in their items and then price pieces pennies on the dollar so that their total amount could never amount to that $14.99 charge. I was just about to print a label to sell with you when I noticed, wow, none of my boxes from the last year have made ANY money! All $0.00! One label was even listed incorrectly as a bag, so you deducted $2.99 from my total. But oh, that won't make a difference because my total doesn't even amount to the $14.99 charge. You're already making money from each resale, why not make it so we don't have to pay our resale customers at all! It's clear your business model is a SCAM. "We have to pay for photographing, our rent, blah blah blah", all PR excuses. Recent headlines are saying your company is negative per share. Your social media employees (or chatgpt) can write all they want to save face, but at the end of the day, we all know your CEO's pockets are fat. 2021 Thredup was amazing, 2026 Thredup is digging its own grave. Disgusting.

We’re sorry to hear that your experience did not go as expected, and we understand that the processing fee may feel frustrating. However, it helps cover the cost of inspecting, photographing, listing, and storing items, which allows us to provide a full-service resale experience. Additionally, item payouts can vary depending on factors such as brand, condition, and current resale demand.

We truly appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback, and we will be sure to pass your comments along to the appropriate team. Customer loyalty and trust are very important to us at ThredUp, and we are committed to maintaining those values in our business. We have also requested additional information so we can review the clean out bag you mentioned and take a closer look at your experience.

This used to be a great…

This used to be a great way to get some extra cash for high quality clothing. Now they care more about profit… shocker. Charging for bags $15, then charging for shipping, all while receiving items like barely used golden goose sneakers that they say need to be recycled, while someone probably took them home as spoils or were sold for 100% profit. I have used them for years and now see such a sham of an organization.

I used to love ThredUp in its early…

I used to love ThredUp in its early days. While selling clothes to secondhand consignment stores like Plato’s Closet never gives you a huge payout, at least I used to get some money from my sales as ThredUP credit to put towards future purchases. Now, the fees are absolutely ridiculous. WHY is there a $15 service fee and $3 charge for a clean out bag? I’ve only been able to earn a little under $7, and I’m not forecasted to make $8 to cover the $15 service fee before being able to cash out. Will I owe ThredUp money then??? Unfortunately, I am blown away by how cash grabbing this business has become. I get you need to find ways to make money to make the business sustainable. But maybe find another way so you’re not chasing away potential sellers and customers.

Hello Ryenn,

Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback—and for supporting ThredUp over the years. We’re sorry to hear how frustrating this experience has been. We understand how changes to fees can be disappointing, especially when earnings from a Clean Out are lower than expected.

The fees helps cover the cost of processing Clean Out bags, including shipping, inspecting items, photographing, listing, and storing them in our warehouses. These fees allow us to continue operating and processing millions of items each year.

To clarify, you will never owe ThredUp money if your sales don’t cover the service fee. We appreciate you sharing your perspective and will be sure to pass this feedback along to our team as we continue working to improve the experience for our sellers.

I have enjoyed buying from them but…

I have enjoyed buying from them but selling with them on my first try was disappointing. They rejected two brand name items (Pact and Vuori) that retail for over $100 each. The morning after they rejected them, I reached out and offered to pay to get them back
They refused to look for them in their apparently massive stock of rejected clothes from yesterday. Very disappointing and I won't sell with them again.

Hi Trisha! We're so sorry to hear about your experience.
We unfortunately can't guarantee which items will be accepted for sale once they reach our facilities for processing. If you plan on sending us any items that hold sentimental value or that you think you’d want back in the event that they cannot be accepted for sale for any reason, we recommend using our Premium Clean Out option which includes the added perk of unaccepted items being returned.

Hey there. We apologize that you didn't have a great experience with us! Our payouts are a result of doing what we can to make our business work so that we can operate a one-stop thrifting destination. We hope that anyone who is shopping for something can find exactly what she wants - for a way better price than retail, and in a way that's way easier on the planet. Every item we receive incurs costs for us to list it - housing, photographing, pricing, itemizing, shipping - these all cost us in labor, logistics, and rent. We aim to be as transparent as we can be with our payouts through our Payout Estimator. We try not to surprise people with our payouts! We instead work to remind folks that ThredUp is the most convenient way to sell your old items - no work is done your part! The problem with ThredUp (as a seller)…

The problem with ThredUp (as a seller) is that you don’t know what items they will accept. In my last box, they designed 5 brand new or nearly new Barefoot Dreams items as “no earnings” meaning I got nothing for them. When I pushed back I realized they did this because the items were considered out of season. They never make that clear so it’s always going to be a gamble when you send things in. They refused to send the items back so I have no recourse. I learned my lesson though—I won’t sell with them again.

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback and experience as a seller with us. We truly understand how disappointing it can feel when some of your items are not accepted during the consignment process. The selection of items is influenced by several factors, including current demand, our existing inventory, and seasonal trends. We want to make sure our sellers have options, so we offer a premium consignment service for an additional fee. This service allows you to have any unaccepted items sent back to you after your bag has been processed. It's important to consider this option if you think you might want your items returned, since unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that any specific items will be accepted. We hope this information is helpful. If you need further clarification, please don't hesitate to reach out to our support team.

The fees cancel out anything you make…

The fees cancel out anything you make selling the clothes. There's a fee to ship the clothes to them. Don't be fooled if they send it to you as a free promotion; they'll charge you after your item sells for a few cents. Then if you eek out a couple of dollars, they charge you to cash out. You're better donating your clothes and getting a tax deduction or trying your local consignment.

Scammed and they stole

Scammed and they stole. I sent in my kits and never got any notification that my high end items were listed. I sent in 2 pairs of designer shoes new in box with tags 600 & 800 and price attached. They sold the shoes for 30 dollar each I made 14 dollars on one shoe and the other 21 dollars. They also under sold and purposely undervalued 5 pairs of designer jeans which had tags attached for 60 dollars. They don’t sell the shoes over 200 so they avoid paying the 80 percent commission payout. Each shoe was to sell for no less then 400. They took a pair of high end designer sunglasses new in box and cheated me out of the 80 percent commission selling the glasses for a fraction of what the brand sells for on their platform. I contacted them right away for my items back and they said too late they sold after 2 minutes of being lasted. Interesting isn’t it? Only an employee would be able to grab this steal of deal that fast. After reaching out to them I was contacted by a very rude lady who told me she would increase the payout to 30 whole dollars! Are you kidding this is so insulting and shameful they way they treat women, Scamming is not ok. My other Kit they lost and refuse to provide me fair compensation after forcing me to wait 3 entire months to be paid on it. I would not recommend sending anything to them they are dishonest and I’m taking legal action, already contacted the Attorney General. They owe me 80 percent commission on all my designer items 7 of them, the 30 dollar increase they offered me was offensive and a scam. I only wish I had read here before being scammed. These are facts not claims.
